Best job for a high school senior?

Currently I'm working at a Dairy Queen, which pays decently ( comes out to 10+ an hour including tips), but I'm looking for a good summer job on top of it to earn some extra money for college. I turn 18 in a month, and was thinking about waitering.

So what does everyone think is the best job for an 18 year old?

Waiter, cashier (retail could be easy, comissioned area's can rake in a LOT of money), mechanic, gym, or a sports place.

I just graduated igh school and I'm 18. So I'm working for the forest service in wild land firefighting. Hard work but, very exciting job.

If you're 18, you can try applying to Kelly Services and they'll hook you up with a job. I'm working for them this summer to get some money for year two of college, and I get paid $100 per day. It looks good on a job resume, too.

WTF am I missing? 8 places, and zero calls?

it takes like a week or two for them to call sometimes.
and dont put **** in online, go in there in person and ask for an application.
I've gotten hired for every job I've applied for..so Iuno.

Like Patrick said, it takes a bit sometimes to call back.

Also, AMC, Walgreens, and CVS (and sometimes EB Games) are ALWAYS taking applications, even if they have no need for them right away.

As far as applying online, it's half and half. I've done it a few times when I've either been busy or at night. It's not a bad thing, you usually get a call to come in and meet with them.

Try waitering at a nice-ish restaurant. I doubt the really nice ones will higher younger people, but you could give the Olive Garden a go. The nicer the restaurant, the higher you earn in tips. Or try one of those sort of upscale cafe-type places.

I know me too. Damn. I handed them in from late april to late may, to various places. I tried for a lotta local places too, I like to support em. I had a pretty good resume for my age (lots of computer related stuff). I handed in resumes when there was an application. I handed in cover letters when it was resumes only, no application. I tried to do follow up calls, but a few places just said they didn't have a hiring manager or HR director I could talk to. "They'll call you when they feel like it"

I could probably get a job at the corner store but I rather not.

I know how you feel man. I got the same dilemma. Well tommorow i'm going to try searching some more.

Some places that come in mind not above are Jamba Juice, Safeway, Gamestop, Sees Candy? Whatever. I'll go find out.

Yup I tried a few retail stores. I even tried large retail stores as much as I would hate working for the devil. But I think god gave me a sign when no one has called me back: "**** a 9 to 5"

True about that computer stuff. Some stuff was very slightly related to retail. But anyway what else do they want me to put on a resume as my first year I can get a 9-5 slave job? "i sold lemonade" ha haaaa. At least I had some real jobs with real commitments on my resume. I even had an inside person at one large retailer/corporation. Some senior at my school works or worked there. She told me she goes thru the resumes there.

Call your nearest business center and they'll give you a list a mile long of business who are desperate. business centers alotof the time are located right next to banks, theres like employment readyness people there all the time. Ask em for help on your resume and look for somebody who loves their job if you can. They'll tell you how to make your resume stand out, and it works better than any resume software you can find. Then ask them if they know any small businesses that are hiring, and ask if they're nearby.

The big places that are all beaurocratic and stuff will take you on as a slave and thats the best you'll get. The training will suck, and the job will suck even more. Your coworkers will either complain or will have adopted the slave mentality. You might get lucky though and find a really kinky broad working there who loves to party, or you might find a new friend who'll hook you up every night with anything(women, parties, and everything else you need to make you feel better about yourself)... good luck though they might already be taken.

The best bet is to find start-up businesses that aren't strict. They need to have a phone number, and you need to be able to talk to a manager like hes a freaking person. Just go in, say hi, tell em you aren't a quitter, and that you have initiative. Tell em your sorry for taking so ****ing long to get your first job, and tell em you'll do ***** work to make up for it. He'll love your "go get em attitude".... trust me its 1000x better than working for a franchise like dairy queen. You'd need to work there for tens of years, or become the bosses best friend before you ever get anywhere there.

The small business route is like an investment. If you're willing to work whenever you can, and do your best, the boss will give you as much freedom as he can, and he'll help you out if you are brutally honest and optimistic with him. You can work with him for years, and get him to explain his business plan with you, offer to take work home if you can. Do your damndest to be the kind of guy the boss can call "most improved".

I also got to add: my parents are super strict against restaurants. They feel as though I'll start to stink like a restaurant. They just think it's below me.

I'm going to try Office Max tomorrow. I'll see about GameStop. Besides that I think I'm out of luck.

I started work as a construction grunt at 16 years old, money was decent. Masculine job, mature job, I absolutley loved it.

I don't think I could ever work a degrading, silly job at a McDonald's or Dairy Queen, that's just me.

Are you kidding me, working at DQ was the best thing I ever did. Everyone in my school knows me and loves me because I have control over their product and prices. When I'm feeling friendly I give free ice cream to people and they remember that sort of thing.

It's definitely a step up from my old job of prep boy at a restaurant, worse pay there and a lot harder, even though working at DQ isn't as easy as it sounds.

Anyway when I turn 18 I'm probably going to try and waiter, it seems like a good job for me with great pay.

it's awesome. we get to chill a lot and the people there are cool... as well as a lot of hot girls

In my experience, the best jobs (in no particular order):

-Best Buy: good employee discount on electronics and ****. If you want to buy a tv/camera/stereo/computer or whatever before leaving for college you can get a nice chunk of change off. Retail customers are a serious PITA though.

-Upscale restaurants: You can usually get hired as a food runner and make a nice percentage of the tips. I had a friend making close to $20/hr even on weeknights.

-Golf/Country club: There's one here where caddies earn a minimum of $100 per round. Plus the perks of networking with the members.

-Lifegaurd: If you're a decent swimmer and get your CPR certification, you can get paid to sit around and tan while flirting with chicks in bikinis and chilling with friends. Most places like pool clubs you'd never have to actually get in the water. Beaches are a bad idea. Usually earn like $10+/hr.
