Back when I was a BAFC (below average), it was incredibly frustrating. I would see dudes holding hands with their pretty girlfriends and it just made me green with envy. I probably would have done anything to get a proper girlfriend (the best I managed was the occasional hook-up with a drunk sorostitute). But looking back on it now, I realize that I wasn't ready for it.
In a way, not having a girlfriend actually helped me. I was such a chump back then that if I did have a girlfriend, I would have completely dedicated my life to her. Not having the time demands of a girlfriend on my plate, I managed to buckle down and study. I am by nature a lazy person. If I didn't have my dad pushing me, I would never have studied. I definitely wouldn't have studied much at all if I had a girlfriend.
A couple of my AFC friends had their life courses completely changed because they landed girlfriends before they were ready. Both of them ended up devoting themselves to their girls. One of them was studying to be a chemical engineer. But because he spent all his time with his girl, he failed a bunch of classes and he ended up switching to an easier major. Now he's looking for a job as a high school teacher in a time when they are cutting those jobs left and right. That girl dumped him a few years ago.
My other friend aspired to be a lawyer. He could have done it. But he ended up dedicating his life to his girl. Instead he decided to stay with her when she pursued graduate school at a school where they didn't have a law school. So he worked odd jobs that don't even require college degrees while she studied. They were briefly engaged, but as the girl neared the end of her studies, she dumped him.
Both of these guys could have had it so much better. One of them would have been a chemical engineer and the other would have been a lawyer. Instead, both of them are 3 years out of college and wondering what to do with their lives. They would have hated the though of being in such a predicament just a few short year ago. That could have been me.
I'm glad that I got into a good career and I know where my life is going. At the age of 25, a man is a hell of a lot wiser than he was when he was 21 or 22. I am glad that I did not make any stupid decisions back then that altered the course of my life. It's so sad that many guys do.
