Advantages:
Highly subjective. I think generally, the advantages are:
- You know the person you are with is with you because they love you for who you are -- not because they want sex from you.
- You form relationships that are based entirely on how you feel about each other, and not hormones that are released during sex. (Some people say that these hormones are "important for bonding," but I know for a fact that you can bond perfectly well without them. Humans are not unable to bond without boning. To suggest as much is ridiculous. Moreover, hormones change. There's even evidence that a lot of marriages end because the woman stops taking birth control -- and suddenly finds that she's not attracted to her husband of however long anymore. Scary stuff.)
- No pregnancy.
- No STDs.
- No unwanted sex (a surprising number of women, and especially young women, report having sexual encounters because they thought the dude wanted to. To me, this is one of the saddest reason to have sex.)
- If you're celibate for religious reasons, you feel strength in your faith and convictions.
- If you want to be having sex but you refrain, you fortify your ability to self-regulate. Not just when it comes to sex, but also to dieting, exercising, being patient, etc.
- More sleep?
- More time to do other things
- Depending on your reasons, perhaps the belief that you are saving yourself for the right person (e.g., sex is a gift from God meant to be shared only between a husband and a wife).
- You save money (thousands of dollars, apparently) by not having to pay for contraception.
- No pressure to take (or ask your partner to take) pills that mess up her heart, brain, memory, weight, emotions, blood, etc.
Disadvantages:
This is also highly subjective -- there are a lot of reasons people choose to be celibate. If you're celibate because you don't want to have sex, then I don't really see any disadvantages. But:
- For someone who wants to be having sex but is a celibate, it's obviously a struggle.
- For someone who is celibate for reasons he/she cannot control (injury, illness), the inability to do something you want to do with someone you want to do it with can be devastating.
- For someone who is celibate and also does not have orgasms in some other way, either, he/she may be missing out on certain health benefits associated with orgasm. Better sleep, stress release, lower blood pressure, lower experience of pain and reduced risk of endometriosis, to name some.
- Blue balls.
- Reduced ability to relate to, like, 90% of your peers.
- A lot of people won't date you if you're celibate.
- A lot of people will judge you and think you're weird.
