TBH, I think with the rise of the Metaverse and so many distractions, they likely try to sedate the common man and the common person to the hassles of everyday life. The world is going to suck a ton but most people will lock themselves into the screens so much that they will easily be able to disassociate from it. It is sort of like how videogames, internet porn, and the rise of the smartphone took people's attention away from actually socializing. Objectively it sucks compared to the good ole days but you have gotten so used to it.

I think the elites, if they are smart, just expand more on the distractions to keep people busy, sedated, and calm. I won't be shocked if sex dolls that resemble real life pornstars become a thing at this point. With that many distractions, people will take whatever garbage government throws their way, be happy with it, accept mediocrity at best, and sort of live with it better than we are now.

If you think about it, we do have too many people in this world and most men in the western world are not cut out for the competitive environment that exists out there. I think more than anything the future will be better for the average and below average guy who has basic income, basic shelter, and even things like sex dolls and videogames to keep him happy.

Who I think the future will suck a lot for are people that are up and coming, want to rise to the top, but aren't already there. It is going to be a lot tougher to be a millionaire and a part of the elite if you aren't already.

Metaverse isn't really new by the way.
It has already been tried in form of "Second Life" and it failed then and probably will this time too maybe?
So in my mind Metaverse is just a 2.0 copy of second life really. Not much of an upgrade so far either. Heck.. I even think the graphics in second life is way better. Not sure though.

Sure Second life still exists https://secondlife.com but who is mostly using it, except for nerds, tech freaks and outcasts?

But yes, if they would pull of building a such real version as "The Matrix" in those famous movies built by the machines where you cannot anymore distinguish the difference between real life reality and the computerized matrix then it will be highly addictive and dangerous to common man.

That form of metaverse would be deeply concerning and it is probably Mark SuckerFvcks wet dream which he faps to each night.

What is the advantage for them to keep us in our houses? You'd think that they at least would want to use us as worker drones.
Seems like they would prefer us dead rather than just sit in our houses and consume.
Working remotely. Have you seen The Matrix? :D

Both the poor and upper classes usually have an abundance of free time to do as they please ( arguably the most important asset )
I agree. In the US, the poor are also rich in terms of free health care, and especially if one has kids, free food and sometimes housing. People I know with jobs are forced to buy health insurance that is stupid expensive and doesn't cover much. They take away the food aid after a while if you don't have a kid (thanks, Bill Clinton). And the people in housing have to pay a tiny rent payment of like $35, but they are not allowed to have a job to make that money, or else the rent goes up.

Because it is communism and totally unsustainable?
Yeah, unsustainable is the key word here. You noted how far in debt we are. It's astonishing to me that we are that far in the hole and digging deeper, but we're still looking for groups of people to give more free government handouts to. The bubble is going to burst at some point.

On the other hand, if people have to work for a living, society as a whole will move forward, and we'll invent new and better technologies, and more wealth. All that goes out the window when you kill off the work ethic though. I guess it just depends on whether you think life is worth living or not. If you don't, you're not going to put in the work. Or to put into terms guys around here can understand, if you don't think it's worthwhile to be in shape, you won't bother going to the gym.
