Most "beefcakes" also had obstacles to overcome(Brad Pitt's not the tallest guy on the planet, George Clooney isn't especially jacked, Tyson Beckford's teeth are crooked... The list could go on), and in SOME respects, it's easier for us as men to become more handsome than it is for ugly women to become beautiful. Proof?:
