1 in 25 men are not the biological father of one of their children---most never find out the truth

I am watching a Netflix series called "My Daughter's Father" while doing the elliptical at home during cardio sessions and I got to the end of episode one and it had the following on the screen:

"1 in 25 men are unknowingly raising a child that they are not the biological father of. Most never find out the truth."

I had no idea it was this prevalent and this raises some very interesting, and honestly disturbing questions...

Essentially every person on this forum likely knows at least 2-3+ people that are not actually the child of the person who raised them and believes they are the father.

Hell...to take it one step further, some of US may not actually be the child of the man who raised us and we call Father and he calls us son/daughter.

I find it pretty crazy that it's this widespread.

Has anyone here actually found out that they were not the child of the person they thought was their father at some point? Did this effect your relationship with him/you mother at all?

Only 1 in 25? I know I've read stats on here somewhere that were much worse than that. 4% isn't that bad, really.

Where do they get that number? I would have guessed as high as 10-15%, even 20% wouldn't seem like too much of a stretch. How can we really know?

This is talked about in evo psychology, it's the essential dual mating strategy: one man provides the genes, the other provisions for her. The former being the attractive/strong man who won't stick around, and the latter being safe/weak guy who she can control and manipulate into being a provider for her and the kids.

1 in 25 sounds suspiciously low. There have been other studies putting that number somewhere between 1 in 5 and 1 in 10.

From what I have seen and read this is just misattributed data from DNA testing places that gets attributed to the whole population at large which is not a valid way to try and extend conclusions.

"Statistics claiming that 20% to 30% of men are not the biological father usually come from commercial or legal DNA testing laboratories. However, those numbers only reflect tests where the father already had strong doubts or disputes, they do not represent the general population."

If it is 1 in 25, I'd consider that good news. Unless you happen to be the one in 25.

That’s likely true. 20-30% would be a pretty high number. I still suspect it’s more than 1 in 25 though.

A story less original than learning alleged adults over the age of 25 frequently punt toddlers across the room, as a means of displacing their rage onto someone unlikely to send them to the morgue, in reward for such a transgression

Only difference between now and yesteryear? DNA makes the truth less easy to conceal

A first-rate scam artist is often required to identify a craftily constructed con, sadly. Reminds of an interview I once heard with Ricky Jay(RIP), where he was asked how he began learning sleight of hand, to which he replied in earnest:
