There was a male pilot on board as a passenger on the Siuox City Iowa flight that crashed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Airlines_Flight_232 He helped the crew get to the airport by crawling into the belly of the plane and pumping a hydraulic system by hand to make enough pressure so they could steer the plane. He just happened to be an instructor for that plane and knew a way the hydraulic system could be manipulated. It was very physically demanding, but he kept at it and they made it to the airport. Half the people on board died, but everyone would have died if not for him.

So saving the lives of a hundred people came down to a test of physical labor, strength and endurance. To be fair, that's very similar to the job of carrying your unconscious body out of a burning building, which we let also women do.
