Is it advances in cosmetic surgery? No, not really since only about 1-2% of the population has cosmetic surgery.
Our genetics have gotten better? No!
Natural Selection? No, wrong again.
The reason (atleast in modern countries with money) that we see so many people today that are atleast moderately attractive instead of ugly or very average is due to Orthodontic therapy (better known as braces) and Orthognathic Surgery.
I guarantee there is a 50/50 chance that cute girl you saw earlier today only became cute after having orthodontic treatment when she was younger or orthognathic surgery when she was in her adult years.
People, falsely believe the orthodontics you had when you were a child or adolescent just straighten the teeth. Orthodontists straighten your teeth and bring your upper and lower jaws into harmonious balance by utilizing attachable appliances (headgear, herbst appliances)
Which brings me to my next main point:
An attractive looking face is alot more than having a decent sized and shaped nose, straight teeth and nice skin like most people believe.
A prerequisite to any attractive looking face is decent bone structure between the upper and lower jaws. Most below average faces have upper/lower jaws that are either too small, too big, too narrow or out of position with one another.
Orthodontists correct these abnormalties when you are a child or adolescent because your facial bones are still growing and your facial skeleton can be manipulated.
Once your facial bones have stopped growing, braces and dentofacial appliances will not work! The only way to correct misaligned jaws is through surgery.
Orthodontics and Orthognathic Surgery IS NOT considered cosmetic surgery since their main goal is to achieve proper function of the jaws.
These two fields were around 40+ years ago, however they were in their infancy and not very common.
