Why men need to 'think like women' to succeed

The authors of a new book, The Athena Doctrine, claim they have carried out a 'global referendum on men' which concludes that blokes need to think and behave more like women in order to succeed. But what are 'female traits' and is this a useful conversation? Karen Robertson isn't convinced.

Never mind a world where men think more like women – how about one where we all just think? End of.

Did you feel that? That was the ground shifting beneath your feet. And it has nothing to do with extreme weather. No, this is less elemental, more fundamental. Or so says new book The Athena Doctrine, which debuted at number two on The New York Times best seller list this week.

Thanks to one of the books authors, John Gerzema, a TED circuit regular with an ability to spin headline gold, (“femininity is the operating system of 21st century progress”), the book’s been receiving some fist-punching female-friendly press.

According to Gerzema and co-author Michael D’Antonio, what we’re witnessing is a seismic shift in terms of what values drive success, morality and happiness. In an increasingly social, transparent and interdependent world, say the authors, values traditionally considered to be ‘masculine’ - decisiveness, aggression, resilience, pride and analysis, no longer cut the proverbial world-shaking mustard. Now what is required in order to create the kind of future we all want live in, is listening, collaborating, flexibility, sharing the credit - and our feelings. You know, ‘feminine’ traits.

The authors spent nearly two years travelling to 13 countries, 26 cities and speaking to 64,000 people. The process resulted in what Gerzema calls a, “global referendum on men”. From Peruvian favelas to Stockholm start-ups, more than half of the people consulted were dissatisfied with the conduct of men in their country - reckless risk-taking, inequality - just two of the ills that have resulted from male-brain dominated thinking. In fact, two-thirds of the 64,000 polled felt that the world would be a better place if men thought more like women.

So, what precisely does thinking like a female entail? The authors have supplied a list of what you need to be a good at doing or being – in order to assume the mindset of a woman:

1. long-term planning

2. expressive

3. reasonable

4. loyal

5. flexible

6. patient

7. intuitive

8. passionate

9. empathetic

10. selfless

But before we uncork the champagne and declare a resounding victory for women the world over, let’s press pause for a second. Is it really helpful to apportion values and attributes by gender? Is that not perhaps a little reductive? I know plenty of guys for whom forward-planning involves more than simply carrying a condom around in their wallet and many others who could out-loyal a golden retriever. I also know scores of strong woman whose resilience in the face of setback continues to be an inspiration and a couple of ladies spring instantly to mind for whom ‘reasonable’ would be the last on the list of adjectives I’d use to describe them.

Despite the title of the book (Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom) and the cataloguing of gender specific traits, the authors say that their book is gender neutral: “Men versus women in not a zero-sum game,” they write. In a recent interview Gerzema said: “We’re saying that ‘feminine’ values don’t belong to one gender – they are a form of innovation and competitive advantage inside us all.”

I’m confused. Are the authors saying passion, empathy, intuition, patience et al as are feminine traits or aren’t they? But perhaps more importantly, does it matter? It’s all starting to sound a little like semantic hand waving to me.

I’m not suggesting that collaboration, selflessness, loyalty etcetera aren’t worthy values for us all to strive for irrespective of what gender we happen to have been born. It’s just that I’m not certain further entrenching stereotypes by creating a distinction in the first place (even with the disclaimer that ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ are just labels), propels us there any faster.

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

Global **** test bro.

Show me one billionaire who does not posses many of those traits. Those traits combined with the "masculine" traits = WORLD BEATER.

The elite have been waging a war on real men for 50 years...

feminism was part of the plan...and now the plan is nearly complete

90% of western men under age 25 are tight jeaned faggots....men have become women..preening, toe polish homos who watch *fashion tips* videos.

this will only get worse

and very few men will care...men are addicted to puzzy and if men are convinced that they must become faggots to get puzzy     they will become faggots.

well bryfault law already kill the loyalty and selfless from the "feminine world"

the rest? I can say a really good employee should ahve that traits, since he will work for me and make me profit, I would share a little of it to him to amke more motivated, but I never saw a well sucessfull person without taking risks, be it on anything since sports to companys.

and saying using feminine traits the words, back stabing, rumors, and falsety comes to my mind.

to resume I guess people really want more behaved employees to work for then

LMAO!

All of those 10 attributes are the best of masculine qualities, and those women wish they have, not what they actually have.

If you currently have too many women chasing you, calling you, harassing you, knocking on your door at 2 o'clock in the morning... then I have the simple solution for you.

Just read my free ebook 22 Rules for Massive Success With Women and do the opposite of what I recommend.

This will quickly drive all women away from you.

And you will be able to relax and to live your life in peace and quiet.

Women only find these 10 attributes attractive in a man if his looks and money is attractive.

Agree with warrior74, thats a global sh1t test.

It's not different than "men has to get in touch with their feminine side", its no different than "play by the rules and finally you'll be rewarded".

Also half of those qualities are exactly what modern women lack, most of them fail the "long term planning" anytime they study useless subjects with no real utility in the market....women studies anyone?

Also women loyal?!?! the war brides fact tells anything yet?
Yeah ask any cuckolded husband or divorced one how loyal their women were.

Not only this stuff is rubbish, not only is a sh1t test but it also smells like sh1t on rubbish.

Have you guys noticed what happens to most of your married friends and acquaintances? You will notice a subtle (at first) shifting from direct communication to covert communication, just like women. They will actually start hinting at things instead of stating them directly! I'm becoming more and more aware of this and noticing how universal it is.

One of my best buddies drops hints at whatever he wants to ask me instead of asking an outright question. That's what first made me aware of this phenomenon. Let's say he wants to go flying our planes. He'll say, "There's not a lot of wind today". Or let's say he needs a tool. He'll very subtly mention he's having trouble doing something instead of asking if I have the tool. I started seeing this in just about all my married friends. I'm finding I have to interpret what the heck they're talking about.

Stuff like this makes me wonder if men are really the weaker sex.

Most men today grow up dominated by their mothers who also dominate the father. They grow up in homes with weak p*ssy whipped fathers or no father at all. Then as adults they spend their lives looking for a new "mother" to dominate them.

I KNOW WHAT A TRUE ALPHA IS BECAUSE MY FATHER IS ONE:

I'm proud to say dad is an alpha male. He is alpha beyond what I think I can ever be. His sexual history is epic. He is an intelligent business man. He is not afraid to hit you in the face (male or female). A true alpha.

My parents split when I was young. My mother was my dads second wife. He has stayed single since then spinning plates. My mother tells stories about how "bad" he was, yet she tells them almost as if she wishes she was still with him. The stories my mother has told me about him are truly impressive (even though she didn't intend for them to be).

Even as a grown man, I feel like a boy around him. He is a "real man" in every sense. My mother got modeling offers when she was younger to give some perspective on what my dad was "pulling" back then.

The most amazing part of all this is my dad never paid alimony because neither my mother or his previous wife ever demanded it.

I will never reach this level of alpha. Most men won't.

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.
