Why is Disco Considered the Sh*t Music of the 70's?

I've always wondered this, why was disco resoundly sh*tted upon as a musical genre in the 70's? I mean other artists would b*tch about disco in their sounds talking about how bad the music. Hell, there was a even a Disco Demolition Night, promotion at Cominsky Park that turned into a riot.

All these are dope ass songs, which unlike today's records, (which pass themselves off as hot records,) have harmonies, melodies, lyrics, and hooks. How it that the "crap" music from damn near forty years ago is HELLA BETTER than most of the stuff that's on this week's Billboard Hot 100?

Because it was, basically. I grew up in the 70s, and compared to the classic rock stuff that was happening at the time, it was just nowhere near as cool. I remember the song "Disco Duck", I thought that exemplified everything that was wrong with it.

I mean, now I can listen to it with nostalgia, and think "Oh, that was a pretty cool tune". But at the time, when you were trying to be cool, and be a rocker, the disco stuff was just lame. Music was something that was supposed to be able to be played in a garage, with a drummer, a bass player, a guitarist, and maybe a keyboardist if you were extravagant.

That said, I always liked KC and the Sunshine Band. And the Bee Gees were an actual band before the disco era, so they brought some cred to it.

In some ways though, disco has won out. Rock is dead for all practical purposes, while club dance music remains popular.

My dad was a HUGE rock and jazz fan. He has old Police, Hendrix, Black Sabbath and a ton of jazz records all on vinyl (big into rock in his teens and 20s, and then ventured into jazz as he got older). This is what he had to say:

"Son...for guys like me...disco music wasnt 'cool' or 'hip'. It was clubby stuff. Kinda like how some of you kids look at your poppy bass beating dance tunes of today."

Though I really wouldnt put disco in the same league as todays popular club music. Disco had a lot more talented musicians behind it than a lot of todays popular acts. But I do get my dads point...that theres always that part of the music-sphere thats seen as uncool and too clubby for some.

PS - My parents are amazed that Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars is even a popular song for my generation. Its amazing how history repeats itself with kids liking disco funk type songs, and seeing flat top haircuts on youngsters again.

Probably because you named roughly half of all good disco songs.

I kid of course, disco had many great songs, especially in the beginning. But like many pop genres with a sudden rise a lot of crap followed in it's wake.

Like all beat-driven music genres it's going to get crap from rock fans. Hip Hop did and now EDM (for lack of a better term) does. Rock also hasn't usually been party music since Elvis and so fans take it too seriously sometimes. Other types of music that are more for partying also get the same treatment from rock fans. Hair Metal and country music get the same reaction.

Disco was also seen as a urban, gay, black, Latino genre which probably also provoked some of the backlash considering the times.

I have an iPod with over 2,000 songs on it from Benny Goodman to Zedd. There's a disco song or two on it.

This is one of the rare times I have seen 70s disco being talked in a negative light. If anything I heard disco was a saviour of 70s music.

Despite all the hate for disco, plenty of people still listen to it 40 years later. I can't imagine any recent music being listened to 40 years from now.

Disco was basically a "scene" back then, much like raves are but more mainstream.

There were some talented artists that knew how to craft good songs in the disco era. Not only that, a lot of rock artists crossed over into the disco genre to help sell albums. Disco ended up being a cash cow for a lot of companies. Disney made a Mickey Mouse disco album, The Muppets made the Sesame Street Fever album, K-tel put out a package that taught you how to do the latest disco moves along with numerous disco Christmas albums, etc. The scene suffered a major burnout and backlash.

It's a shame people aren't as passionate about things like this today. We could get rid of all this Katy Perry 5hit with a record burning protest.
