The Rake gives all of himself to a woman. But how does he manage to not repel her by seeming desperate?

I think in the preface, for sure beginning of the book, greene says the key to being the ultimate seducer is to choose your victim wisely, something along those lines.

It's actually the rake's confidence that wins women over. It takes major confidence to overtly and persistently proclaim your desire for a woman...the caveat is to not do so in a needy manner.
