why do you get sore

probably a dumb question but i was just wondering. i know that the reason it hurts while working out is a realease of acid. but why do you get sore the next day.

Well, when you lift, you break down your muscles. The fibers are ripped apart and then when they heal back together your muscles are stronger. I assume that these rips in the muscle fibers are what caused the pain, although I could be wrong.

Well there's at least one 'expert' out there that agrees with you.

DOMS is thought to be a result of microscopic tearing of the muscle fibers. The amount of tearing depends on how hard and how long you exercise and what type of exercise you do.

well wait, why would it take about a day or so to be sore if your ripping the muscles right then

Because lifting and injury releases endorphines. You won't feel the pain right away until the body focuses on healing. Like a sprained ankle doesn't hurt so bad, you can keep going, but you'll feel it the next day.

Soreness is caused by release of lactic acid and microscopic tearing of the muscles.

There is also a whole inflammatory reaction that occurs at the level of the muscle fiber. Several inflammatory molecules are released. This is why anti-inflammatories such as aspirin and ibuprofen are effective for DOMS.

Okay so here's another question:

Sometimes I feel not quite as sort two days after I the heavy workout but still a little stiff. Is it good to hit the muscles again or wait until there is no soreness.

I've also been taking MRP Protien that has Glutimine that is supposed to help.

Some types of soreness are good indicators that you are overtraining.

Example. My shoulder was sore as hell from bench pressing. I was lifting too much too quickly. This meant that I needed to take a break.

But if you are training in a sane manner, soreness is natural and you don't need to wait until the soreness goes away (although that isn't a bad idea). Just give it at least 48 hrs rest for that bodypart.

alright, my wrestling coach a few years bac liked to " run the soreness out". thats obviously if your legs are sore, is this good or does it just break down muscle?

Heres my two cents. I have trained for 7 years. I do believe it is possible to overtrain even when you aren't hoisting the heaviest weights.

Why? Because the body needs to recover when it expends alot of energy.

These bodybuilding workouts where a guy workouts 6 days in a row are crazy.

I am of the opinion now that it is better to always have a day between lifting workouts, even when you are lifting with other body parts. Because it takes a bit out of you.

With running, it may be a different deal. Also if you are training athletically for a competion, you might not have the advantage getting more rest since your training goals are so soon.

I think it is far better to work out hard and get a bit more rest than do several half assed workouts in a row.

You can't go wrong by giving the body an extra day of rest every now and again.
