Suddenly it is so clear: The Cougar trend came to an abrupt end in 2008 - not coincidentally with the Bankster Bailout and Housing Bubble crash.
Why did this effect them? Easy.
Cougars were primarily attractive women born in the 1960's and 1970's who had divorced their husbands and got the house in the settlement circa 1998-2008. With this being during the housing bubble, many of them took a home equity loan. Suddenly they became like men: flush with cash and looking for some hot, young bodies.
Then came their reality check: the credit crash, when we learned that you actually do need to have a job to have a house. You can't just live off the appreciation of the house forever. They never were good at math.
Now we can clearly see that there really aren't a lot of hot women who generate enough for themselves and a man and are willing to finance a boy-toy. Those women were simply spending their ex-husband's hard-earned money, along with the imaginary home equity wealth (that they pretended to have generated by watching soap operas and being a receptionist for 20 years). Then it ran out - and turned into real debt. Most of them are probably bankrupt and living with nana now, and as we know, they didn't reproduce. Funny how Sex and the City went away around then too.
RIP Cougars.
