And for Europe, the most commonly used "simple" classification is NOT northern/southern, is Germany located in Northern or Southern Europe? And how about Switzerland? Is the Netherlands more different from France than it is from Russia?
I think you had the Nordic countries (in stead of northern)in mind as opposed to the southern european countries such as Italy.

The commonly used classification is Western/Eastern Europe. It's not necessarily a political classification after the fall of the Berlin walls, but this division still holds in terms of economic development and lifestyle, thus also the dating scene.
