Where did the FDA get the idea that everyone is eating too much protein?

According to some govt recommendation (I think RDA) everyone is eating too much protein. I think the guide states that something like .36 grams/lbs will cover everyone needs and then some. Does anyone know what this based off of??? I need to know this and figure out why its wrong to convince some protein-phobes to eat more protein. I have a friend who has a bad case of skinny fatness.

I have a feeling that maybe cheaps fast food meats encourage ketosis or maybe it has some ketones in it.

From what I know the FDA has said that 60 grams of protein a day is enough.

I have (powerlifter) friends who have grown off of 60 grams a day, although they never took lifting too serious. I think the concern is that a prolonged excessive
protein intake can cause calcium problems when you are older.

problems will occur without dietary or supplementary calcium as protein can inhibit calcium absorption.

and anyone who grows off 60g protein a day is surely gifted.

the FDA remember is based on the bare needs (the bare essential needs, not the optimal amounts) of sedentary adults, no studies have been made on muscular, hard-training individuals as they are too low a population sample to warrant any sort of research.

I've noticed that the "mainstream" is usually way behind though. They're always coming out with new, groundbreaking studies that experienced athletes look at and say "Uh, we've known that for decades now".
They just found out that milk is better than gaterade for post work out since milk has protein.

Better than JUST gatorade? yeah.

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

RDA is not a government agency, it is a recommendation put out by a government agency. As all government functions it has been accused of political manipulation. Many people believe the Dept. of Agriculture and the farm interests they represent tend to sway the RDA guidelines.

wrong government conspiracy. if anything, the balance of lobbying interests in US ag would inflate the protein intake rec's.

it's much simpler. the protein target goes back to World War II, and was a bare minimum established during wartime rationing in the US. it was established inductively (how much are people eating?--take the bare minimum of that and call it sufficient!) with little deductive scientific justification (actually most of our health marker guidelines were established this way). if anything, the meat & related lobbies have consistently failed to raise the rec.
