If you text a girl say at like 10pm, and you are pretty sure she read it because you could see her get in FB using her phone, but then does not respond until the next day, a few hours after they are up and already at work.

Was just a simple hey, hows things?

Why do they wait so long?

Depends. If she's highly interested she's playing NC on purpose to keep you interested. If thats the case its working as you're posting this thread. I have a girl thats doing it to me now and it's working. Completely different in person we vibe really well and everything is 100% smooth but via text and fb chat she makes it a point to keep me hanging before respoding. But we've already fcked so idk if this applies to you.

On the other end of the spectrum she could simply have really low interest and not give enough fcks to respond until when she feels like it.

Would need more info to diagnose which one is correct.

Probably because it was 10pm, she was going to work the next day and didn't feel like starting up a conversation.
