it used to be my dream to be a famous musician, in the mold of paul mccartney. but now it all seems so pointless. i still love music, but whats the point? paul mccartney is like 65 now. you think he looks at all he's done and is proud? why would you be? whats it gonna matter after youre dead? who's gonna give a shiit about your sales or your companies or your girls or your money or your charm when youre laying in the ground. we all end up in the same place.

now im not too sure about heaven and hell, they seem like they would have to be there but at the same time, they seem remarkably made up. either way, i just cant stand the fact that some day i'll be 60 and i'll look back at what i've done and wonder...why the hell? does any of it matter? how is bill gates different from the garbage man when they're both on their deathbeds?

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

Stop searching for some higher meaning that you've been given from birth by the supernatural -- it doesn't exist.

The only meaning and value that can exist in your life is what you create for it. The point of you dreaming to be a musician is because it was something you would have found value in. Just because there isn't someone telling you to do it, doesn't mean it's not going to make your life better.

Ozymandias by Percy Shelley

I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read,
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed,
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Yes, time will eventually erase all your triumphs. But what we achieve today will exist eternally, because the past is as real as the future it's just we're not there anymore. And yes I am stoned right now.

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

I can solve your problems. Do what you wanted to do before having your midlife crisis and give me all the money you raise. This will be the only way to demonstrate you are not just bullshìtting your way through life.

Bill Gates influenced billions. Some may argue that without him, the personal computer would not exist. When he is dead people will say "That man changed the world"

That, I believe, is the meaning of life. Help others.

Thats the stupidest thing I read all day.
-sigh- I KNEW that would start something.

Windows started a revolution, look at the statistics to prove it. Unix based OSs were used primarily for mainframes (thats what it was designed for after all) and that is still their primary use. After a decade plus, Linux still isn't ready for the desktop (although my Kubuntu partition does come kinda close). If you need to go into a command line at any point, it is not ready for the desktop.

The new macs are real nice and the Macintosh was the only "real" competitor to Microsoft in the late 80s early 90s. However due to Apples unwillingness to seperate the software and hardware, it was too expensive for most people.

Bill Gates then came along with Windows (how he got it is a whole other discussion). It was a user friendly and feature packed operating system, that could be installed on the large chunk of hardware out there. Thus it became a wild success.

if a thread about my early-life crisis turns into a heated discussion over the history of the personal computer, i'm gonna be really pissed.

anyways, whats the difference to bill when he's dead? he'll still just be a corpse, laying in the ground, same as the garbage man. just corpses, thats all we are in the end. no matter how many people we influenced.

Why! I went to the trouble of finding my old enlgish text book and you have beaten me to it!

I am also sometimes guilty of trying to do things for other people, ie wanting to achive high to impress others. You just have to remember that it does not matter if you do not achvie anything out of the ordinary. Just live your life to the best of your ability, if oyu want to do tinhgs to impress others then do so but dont worry about your legecy continuing, because it does not matter who you are, you will not be rememebred for ever.

Maybe there is Heaven, i dont know, thou find reincarnation more plasuable, thou far from certain.

Think how many people you know about (non biblical) from 1000 or mroe years ago. There are people such as pythagoras, famous for his triangle and Tutan-khamun, but what do we care about them, these people mean nothing to us.

The only person whom i can think of that i know of from many years, and whos legacy still lives on and is still thought of with respect is julius cesar. Yes one person out of hundreds of millions of people over the 1000's of years, and just one name. The fact that there are 6 billion people now only reduce your chances.

Do you think it means anytihng to julius cesar to be the most rememebred human being (i said non biblical) that has ever walked on our plannet, well sure if he was alive, but hes dead!

Edit: i forgot to mention Aristotle! and Alexander the Great, thou i think i have still illistrated my point. I have choosen 1000 years because if you go 500 years forward, there are many famous people, sure it has to do with the fact there are wirteen acounts, more evidence etc, but the chance of being known by the masses well in the future is negligable, do you think president bush, david beckham, and britney spears will be known in 200 years time? Heck i doubt even Steven Hawking will!

We are not corpses. Corpses are emotionless. The fact that we have different states of happiness implies that we can be, in fact, be happy.

If joy was not better than death, it would be considered pain. Think about that.

I haven't figured out what the "purpose" of life is. Questioning life for a purpose might not even make any sense.

I believe that the only purpose of life lies inside the individual. You're responsible for making sense of life. Noone can give you a purpose. You're the only one who can fully comprehend your soul, your spirit, and your being.

For me, the purpose in life is coming to harmony with myself.

Ahh... the ultimate question...

:-D

Honestly, I think life is about more than just fun. Living in and enjoying the present, as Holland said, is a very selfish dream to aspire to. No one will benefit, not even you.

I believe we're all called to a certain goodness in this world. It may be small or large, but it's definately got to do with someone else - not yourself.

Your meaning of life may be cliche'd and rhyme with: "Raise a good bunch of kids one day," or "save the world from cancer". The beautiful part is that YOU decide on what YOUR point of life is. :p No one will give you a point, a purpose. Go out and make it yourself.

Pursuing your dreams (even the "impossible" ones) and do not let nothing get in the way.

This is the purpose of life. Doesn't mean it is easy. That's why most people are mediocre.

Bill Gates would die happy.

Life either gets better or worse. If you just continue your downward spiral then there really would be no point in you. Work hard and life will get easier, don't do jack and it'll get harder and you'll feel worse with each day as an opportunity to be happy flies over you.

As for a purpose after death, well who really cares? You'll be dead. However I like to think that future works I will make will cause happiness in people, for the good of the world and the human race, both of which i'm a very big fan of. Every single person counts. One person can influence millions of people for the better, and one person can start a war that kills millions, we need more of those better people.
