What's the deal with phone sex?

I suppose that it's like going to a strip joint, except getting sexually excited via live words, not live images. Or like a one-on-one live cam, except with no visual. Is the prevalence of this just another sign of how sexually frustrated American men are?

From this news video segment, it seems that the phone-ho's have a much lower sexual value than the one portrayed in the commercials. Also, some of these women are married, so I wonder how men here would feel having their wife be such a phone-ho. I myself would feel like a loser if my wife had to do this to help pay the bills.
