What kind of spider is this?

this is what I killed a few minutes ago.
I tried to compare this with black widow photos and it appears black widow has red on its back and this thing had red on the sides of its back.
Help!

Not sure but bright colors on insects in general indicates poison.

Black widows are common here in California, they usually keep to themselves. Normal ant/roach spray will kill them. Their webs are messy, unlike other spiders. And, hatchlings are quite a bit more poisonous.

As a child, I kept one in a jar and fed it flies, until someone told me I could be dead. Poor spider.

@wifehunter your post helped me the most. I went to google images after reading it, and found black widow webs and walnuts. I do have those in my basement.

I did ask people around here about them. They told me they are black widows but are not poisonous. I'm not taking any chances though.
