what is soreness and indicator of?

Does it indicate muscle damage? I heard that the soreness is just lactic acid burns, and not a real indicator if your muscles are fully recovered on not.

I like to know cuz when my muscles are sore, it gives me extra motivation to eat and get as much food into them as possible, so they recover bigger and stronger than before.

Muscle soreness is an indicator of muscle damage ie. from a hard workout the day before. There's no such thing as lactic acid burn, and in weight training you should NOT be getting to a point of lactic acid build up anyways.
