The ASMR industry had an opportunity around 2015-2016 to purge out the prostitution and simps. The discussion was centralized on reddit, where the majority watched ASMR to help them relax or sleep, some were audiophiles who liked quiet sounds in ultra HD (eg. Dimitri from Massage ASMR). They were getting fed up with the sexualized and intimate content. Ear kissing videos, ASMR bikini try on haul videos, concerned girlfriend simulations, etc. Girls would make sfw ASMR and then link their chaturbates. A new audience of depressed, lonely men looking for affection then poisoned the industry. It wasn't always like this.
Some creators who first got into it because content was easy to make gradually started prostituting themselves and catering to the new audience. Some creators (usually on the naive or shy side) began getting stalked and doxxed by these men who grew an obsession with them (I think Springbok ASMR stopped because of this). There was a scandal where a former pornstar who moved to ASMR content and was open about her intentions of prostitution. Viewers began criticizing and even bullying her along with other obvious examples, and this majority was starting to successfully push back. The nsfw asmr got segregated to another subreddit. Male creators got upvoted and praised by the viewers as a more trustworthy counter balance.
This was when a decision was needed. In the end, the decision was to allow prostitution into ASMR, where mods granted this new class of creators protection from criticism.
This is because:
1. Many creators were in solidarity and made Libertarian arguments ("if it's not hurting anyone...", "Don't like it? Don't watch it")
2. Many female creators who saw spikes in viewership and donations from catering to simps began making excuses ("I don't see how showing cleavage is sexual")
3. Simps white knighted their favorite creators when comments under new video posts complained about the obvious shift in tone
But it ultimately came down to:
4. The majority was anti-prostitution, but the mods were pro-prostitution. Mods were more organized, they had their own ways of communicating with each other and creators, were more united (and purged mods who weren't), and they used their mod powers to steer the discussion towards their desired outcome
The mods began removing comments and users under the pretext of "safety." Their plan was to create a politically correct positivity hugbox for scaling up the industry to mainstream appeal, and posts with any harsh tones were deemed as "hate." Since the community was now majority women, simps, and those who were indifferent, the userbase began enforcing these new rules themselves in hopes of forcing an artificial harmony instead of just letting the arguments play out. The anti-prostitution crowd began leaving and were immediately replaced by a massive influx of new people as ASMR began taking off in the mainstream. The remaining creators who either stayed quiet or moved the discussion towards political correctness (ie pro-prostitution) secured six figure incomes and/or large followings.
This was how the debate was ultimately resolved.
An album that used to work for me is Rush's "Grace Under Pressure", at least tracks 3-5. The music is so monotonously repetitive that I would regularly nap to it (this was in the days of CD players, and I would have those 3 tracks programmed in to repeat). That being said, I do enjoy ASMR. I once bought earbuds that couldn't fall out along with a donut pillow. That way, I could fall sleep listening to ultra HD scratching sounds. Knocks me right out.
I need to try that out. What VR headset do you recommend? It is good on VR because they look more real when they are bigger. 180 degree ASMR gives the best realistic experience.
I use the Meta Quest 2. Bought it in 2021.I need to try that out. What VR headset do you recommend?
Yeah exactly. Those always feel like low-grade simping activity to me. It's kind of like lying to myself that I'm not looking at porn but such content is alright. Fun to look at but I try and not engage in such bs these days if I can.ASMR is one thing, but I've seen a lot of videos claiming to be ASMR when it's just sexual titillation (like the above). I suppose titillation can be ASMR though (shrugs).
