Guys, as of late my life has became a bit mundane. I'm really bored most of the time. It took a huge, life-changing event to occur (another thread for another time), but I've realized, without my girlfriend around, I am extremely bored. I have a few ideas of some things I would be willing to pick up, but I was just wondering what you guys do to blow off steam or make your life more fulfilling.

Yeah, I have noticed that nowadays people don't really have hobbies. I think it's because we have all of this entertainment at our disposal now.

We have the internet, netflix, video games, facebook, etc. etc. etc.

Most people nowadays consider "surfing the web" or "video games" a hobby. Some people can watch movies/tv shows on netflix all day long. But, are these really considered hobbies?

I don't think it's a hobby. It's just something people do when they have nothing else to do.

I think this technological age that we live in is making us more complacent with doing nothing.

Think about it: When you are watching tv shows or movies or surfing the web, you aren't actually doing anything productive. but sadly, that is how most people spend their time nowadays.

Ask yourself this question for a test:

"If I turned off my computer and tv, would I go insane from the boredom?"

If you answer "yes," then you have no life.

1. Spending time with my wife and 5-month-old daughter.

2. Playing guitar, writing music, writing lyrics, and recording. I've played guitar for 25 years, so that is by far my "thing" as an individual.

Anything else I might do is just "dabbling" by comparison. Not significant enough for me to list.

1.) Chilling with my daughter. Most important.

2.) Playing pool, basketball, shooting guns, archery, mountain biking, poker and video games. Basically stuff I can do with my buddies. I used to play guitar and harmonica in a band but with my kid, girlfriend, work, and maintenance on the house I guess I like my leisure time to be leisurely.

- Use the Internet (but not just for Facebook but to go on politics and philosophy boards and stuffs)

- Follow my favourite football (soccer) team in England

- Cook

- Go to the gym

- Watch Bollywood movies. I'm not Indian, but those actresses are perfect 10s.

I've got a pretty full life. I write, play, record music, I write a semi-successful blog which includes searching for blog fodder, I have a kid to entertain, I have a house that always needs some kind of renovations, I watch wild feeds on the dish, and I occasionally go out to sing karaoke and perform at open mic nights. Then, throw the girlfriend in the mix.

over the years i have developed some pretty time consuming hobbies

first of all, my job being basically a horse racing handicapper professionally is a non stop grind. 24/7. it's a lifestyle and is very much time consuming. when you get to the level i play at you are always watching a race somewhere always trying to find something or learn something.

but outside of that, things i do that are not internet / video game / TV related

1. gym. probalby where i spend most of my time not at home. generally go to the gym and get a good 45 minute workout, and hit the pool for about 1 hour swimming laps. i really like to swim and i swim like a fish.

2. playing the piano. something i have done for about 2 decades now and still do. i make sure i get a few hours a week in practice and try to teach myself a new song at least once a month or come up with new ways to play old songs

3. something i don't talk about much here but is a tuee passi ton of mine is I freaking LOVE my salt water fish tank. i take my fish very seriously. we have 2 tanks one in our room and one in the living rom the one in the living room being 200gallons and the one in our room being 100 gallons and and more of a reef tank with a few fish where the one in the living room just has some really colorful fish, few tangs few clown fish. the water changes, feeding them, making sure they are getting along nicely there are a lot of nuances that comes with a salt water fish tank. plus women love looking at them. and it's not a very cheap hobby. you will spend money. probalby thousands of dollars ot do it right. a good tank, good live rock, good fish.. i've seen salt water fish go for as mjuch as 2 grand for one (though extremely exotic) fish. i let my son feed the fish now for the most part, that's his "chore"

4. something else i don't talk about alot is big brothers big sisters. i ahve been in that program for almost 2 years now and we have a little 8 year old boy who I am a big brother to and it's to the point that he is practically family. has it very rough at home so whenever he calls either me or my wife will pick him up and let him stay here. he spends the night quite often. good kid. we b brought him over here for christmas last year as his mom was.. "out" last Christmas and no kid should sit home with no toys on christmas if anyone can help it. but a few days a month we will take him and our son to the zoo or to the park or something just to get out the house and do things. i could see a situation where we end up adopting him honestly if his family life gets worse than it is but that's something i would have to talk about with the wife. this is somemthing iw ould strongly recomend more men doing, married or not. you have no idea how bad some of these kids have ith with the drugged up parents. you don';t even have to buy them antyhing, just show them what a non drug using house operates like. like he comes over our house and is just floored that we have like, a kicten full of food. and i tell him look, don't ask if you are hungry get up and grab something to eat. whatever you want. just clean up after yourself. you can see him, just sitting there looking like "damn that's a lot of food" stuff we take for granted.

one day last year he called me out the blue and he is the type of kid that is so used to just gutting it out he doesn't like to ask for stuff / doesn't know how to ask for stuff so the fact that he had called me told me it was pretty bad. he said my mom won't cook anything to eat and i'm hungry... i dropped what i was doing and went over there, mom was high as a kite in her room, i have been around enough high people to know swhe had been on one for a few days. **** broke my heart, kitchen had NO food in it. no drinks, no meat, like a few things of ramon noodeles nad a fe cans of beans and that's it. i took him shopping and bought him about a month's worth of food and told him if he EVER needed annything to eat to call me asap and i would drop anythingi was doing and make sure he had something to eat. you couldn't wipe the smile off that kid's face. if it were not a few days before we left to get married i would have let him come stay with me. but even to this day when he goes home either of us will stop by the grocery store and make sure he has enough food for the week and stuff. honestly with all the stuff i do for myself this makes me feel very good about myself. really nice kid and in the year and a half i have known him he's jsut grown so much and you can start to see the potential the kid has. he's not dumb by any means just no one really ever gave a **** about him. now that someone gives a **** sbout him he's trying. he got his first ever A in school and he ran home and called me he was so happy and i was probably happier for him than he was. think aout going through, first, 2njd, third grade and getting nothing but C's and D's and now yoyu have an A on your report card, he actually pays attention in class now and doesn't act out as much. again just.. be there for someone that needs it. not about what you spend on someone just show them that you give a ****.
throw in tinking with pc's, my love for documentires and history in general, and other various things i want to do accomplish, like i am trying to learn japanese. so I work on this a few hours every week but oi would not call it a hobby. we are going to Tokyo later this year after thanksgiving and my goal is to be able to speak "how to read a menu and get directions" Japanese before we go. that's all just me. not even including my wife's hobbies and my son's. my son has taken a liking to baseball already so we play catch almost everyday. he's a leftie as well. got a little arm on him lol. trying to teach him very basic fundamentals like how to get in a defensive stance and how to attack the ball on a ground ball... though he's still too young to play tee ball it's coming soon. will buy him a baseball bat for his birthday in may and then the fun REALLY stars lol.

What do you guys do for fun?
I write fiction and non-fiction for fun.

I do radio shows for fun.

I watch and critique television shows and Hollywood movies for fun.

More on Movies...

I'm a huge movie fan. I love to delve into the hidden or deeper messages found within popular movies (and not so popular movies too). I also am an artist (pencil, pen, & ink)-----so I have a great appreciation for visual storytelling. To me, HOW a movie communicates it's message is just as enjoyable to me as WHAT it communicates.

Salsa!!

It's almost beginning to outrank weightlifting for me. Weightlifting did tons for my life: expanded my social circle, gave me self confidence, gave me more charisma (my physical presence impresses people), gave me a steady purpose in life... Plus, when I battle the weights, they represent the sh!t I've endured in my life. I approach training with lots of mental power and anger, overcoming the battle with the weights and pushing out a few more reps when my body tells me I can't, represents overcoming all other sh!t in my life. The muscles on my body are a manifestation of my anger towards all the pain and injustice I've had to endure in the past. All that negative sh!t gets transformed into something positive and lasting: a muscular body. Every day I go to the gym, I overcome another obstacle (the gruelling workout. And yes, I do workout like a madman) and I become stronger than the day before (sort of...coz of course it takes your muscles a few days to actually recuperate and grow). It's a process of constant growth, both physically and mentally. Each day, I am a stronger man than I was the day before...

Anyway, dancing Salsa has become sort of the next step after weightlifting. Weightlifting forms the core, it's the basis for a constructive and positive life to me. It sort of keeps me alive, prevents me from feeling weak and perhaps slipping into depression (depression is always luring on me, it takes me over whenever I let my guard down). But surviving isn't enough, just staying alive isn't enough...you need to enjoy life! That's where Salsa comes in...

Dancing is a very intriguing thing... You just move your limbs in sync with music and somehow that brings you joy, haha. More about that here: http://www.joyfulaging.com/JoyfulDancing.htm

Dancing on your own brings feelings of joy, dancing with a chick brings even more joy. Moving in synch with her body, smiling at each other, playing the eye-contact game, touching each others bodies. A whole sh!tload of positive hormones, neurotransmitters etc. get released inside of you. After a night of dancing, I'm just so fvcking happy, you know? The effects are even still there the morning after as I go to work with a smile on my face :)

And you can do this almost any day of the week! Forget those lousy times where you had to wait until Friday or Saturday night to go out... Salsa nights are organized daily!!

Apart from the joy it brings, dancing is the perfect hobby for someone who aspires to be a DJ.

* Get good at approaching? I approach a dozen girls in one night on the dancefloor! Just walk up to them and grab their hand, you don't even have to say anything lol. Of course, dancing etiquette says you just approach her to dance and not to pick her up. But when approaching women for a dance becomes a normal thing to you, approaching girls on the street or in the club becomes a lot more easy too! And obviously, if you like the girl, you DO approach her to pick her up and the dance is just a pretense to pick her up.

* Get good at kino? Dancing IS kino! You hold her hands, you put your hands on her shoulders, her hips, her back, her waiste. You NEED to touch her those places in order to make her do the dance patterns! When you meet a girl on the street or in the club, you can't just hold hands with her or put your arms around her waiste! You need to push through her defences, expand step by step. But in dancing, you do all those things right away as you step onto the dancefloor with her, often without having said one word to each other yet!

* Get good at keeping a conversation going and practising ****y&funny? Well, obviously yoú're gonna talk to the girl during the dance or afterwards. And since yoú dance with a dozen different girls in one night, you get lots of conversational practise.

* Improve social skills/social circle? Everyone knows everyone in the salsa scene, not just in one city but often also in the surrounding cities (as dancers from closeby cities will often visit parties in those cities as well). You get to know LOADS of people, both men and women and from all ages (the age range is very wide at salsa parties, from 16 to 60!)

* Meeting women? Lots of women there, no different from a Saturday night in the club!

It's Scaramouche and late Jophil who kind of inspired me to pick up salsa dancing (plus the final scene in Swingers :)) and I'm forever thankful to them. Honestly, I think it's RIDICULOUS that this stuff isn't mentioned as a mandatory part of the DJ path. It should be a basic advice for anyone who wants to get better at pickup and become a DJ. When you address an AFC it should be like: Get rid of the nerdy haircut, start working out, and start dancing salsa!

The only negative about it, is you need to put quite some practise in before you become good and stop looking like a clumsy noob on the floor. But that goes for most things in becoming a DJ (it's no like doing a bootcamp is any easier!) and this is just another obstacle you'll LEARN to overcome through this! Stepping onto the dancefloor, knowing that the people standing on the side are watching you while you dance, can evoke quite some feelings of social anxiety in the beginning. But once you learn not to care about this, this victory will radiate to any other situation where you have to deal with social anxiety! You will grow as a person, learn how to be confident and handle yourself in social situations etc.

Hell, I can go on and on about the benefits. I truly believe taking lessons and attending salsa parties should be made part of the DJ Bible somehow, there are really SO MANY points of contact with everything that SoSuave is about!

I fish, ride bicycles and smoke fine cigars. Any of these things can be as social or anti-social as you feel to make them.

Biking can be a lonely thing, but get involved in group rides and different areas of the cycling community and you will connect with people.

Cigars can be enjoyed in your backyard, in a comfy leather chair at your local purveyor or at some cigar / wine bars.

Fishing isn't nearly as social, but get friends together and you'll have a blast.

I'd like to learn aikido, and maybe start back up with the fencing I did in college. I used to train people, I can easily brush the rust off and find some people that are interested in the art of the sword.

Family takes up much of my time right now, outside of work.

Outside of that, I very much enjoy the minimal exercise I get to do - but I'm trying to couple that with something else so I'm getting something done while I exercise, that's why I'll likely take up karate once work settles down a little bit.

Golf is usually at the top of my list in down time. I'd like to do more trout fishing and water activities in general, just don't have the money for all the supplies, maybe later on in life.

Flying lessons are on my list as well. Grilling is one of my passions, especially this time of year - I'll probably be smoking ribs this weekend. Always been a pretty good shot, I'll like to get back into shooting guns regularly.

Die Hard is right about the salsa dancing. I've been doing it for 5 years and met plenty of women thanks to that and dated/fvcked them, including one I considered a 10. Its also an instant social circle and a hell of a lot of fun. Partner dancing in general, be it tango/swing/salsa is fantastic.

I also involved in political activism. Changing the world to make it what you want to be starts with you.
