i'm getting a house with another kid in the next couple weeks. This is sorta a college thing. I'm wondering what i need to have in it to make it extra cool/different. I ran a search and didn't find what i was looking for.

You need a nice big functional table. Something my granddad told me but still holds true. I'd get one of those "inverted U" sort of table (I suck at describing but you know what I mean). They have the space to keep things like mattress's and pillows underneat and if big enough can double up as a bed and couch. I'm gonna go with the assumption you dont have a few K's to drop (if you do then ignore me).
Skip the "home entertainment system" and get a computer. Sounds nerdy but a used P3 machine(you can get one prety cheap nowadays) can play DVD/CD/Mp3/Mp4/etc and most consoles PSX and down. Also speakers for computers tend to be better quality for the price(Altec Lancing are allways a good choice on a budget as are creative's). If your still with me then consider a homebrew "projector" as well. It's prety easy to do and can be hiden for a cheap(<$300) 64" high res display.(check Tom's hardware)
Going a bit survivalist, if cash is reall low, consider using concrete furniture(I got a concrete tiled U table btw). There prety confortable actually with the right tiles.
Ofcourse as allways, have a small fridge for booze and possible a charcoal walled box for dope(never know...).

Don't hang pictures of naked girls, music artists, liquor bottles, etc. Every girl knows what these look like.
Instead, get creative. Something that will give you a conversation. For instance, if you went away on vacation and took a nice picture of the ocean or something, get it blown up and framed.

Go to IKEA like mentioned. Get some "fun" furniture. Maybe a few bean bags to lounge on. Everyone loves bean bags.
Candles are good to. Some people think its gay. But the right candle in a clean apartment, makes the atmosphere that much better and relaxed.
If you need a TV, go half and half with your friend on one. Buy a shelf model. You can probably get some really cheap with in the next week or so because they clear out holiday inventory. If you're going to party, no sense wasting money on an expensive TV if you think it might get ruined.
Don't bother with a stereo. Just use your PC to play music.
BUY PLANTS! Go to Lowes, Home Depot, wherever... Get some palms for like $25, and get some creative pots. Keep them in a sunny area, and water them whever the tag says. I have one in my bedroom, makes a huge difference. You can also buy like a $10 accent light to put behind the pot, and uplight the leaves and branches. That always wows them.
If you have a Sharper Image near you, go there for some cool things. Trendy clocks, phones, gadgets, etc.
If you get a hamper, get one thats not fishnet. In a nice clean place, the last thing you want to see is dirty clothes hanging from the back of your door.
You want your place to compliment your personality, and style. Pimp it with class.
