What are the basic steps?

I went to a halloween party last night with three guys(my friend,his friend and his other friend). We were hanging out at my friends friend's house just watching movies and everything. We decided to go crash a party that was across the street. We got in with no problem. We go into the basement where everyone was dancing . The music that was playing was some kind of mexican music(sorry dont know the exact terminology). Scoping the scene out and trying to get what the basic steps they(the folks who were dancing) were doing. I had no clue and was nervous cause i didn't know.
So i just stood there watching the girls pretty much dance with other girls the time i was there. Anyone know what the basic steps to mexican music is, so i'll be more prepared?


Btw, i dont go to parties often. Felt out of place.

There are different types of mex music but i cant think of why someone is playing it at a party. Sure it wasnt like salsa or raggaeton? If it was mexican music you should just ask a woman to teach you how to dance it most of the time they wont mind to teach.

-it was a party with nothing but mexicans
-im not sure about salsa but it wasn't reggeton
-it was difficult to ask cause the music was loud as a mutha(you could hear it a block away)that's why we went over
-i tapped a couple of girls but they just kept it moving

my fault about that. it was my friend, and his friend and their friend.
anyway, they were doing a variant electric slide or something. i was getting it at first ;and then some of them was going in different directions, messing up the line.

i would of loved to do the hokey pokey, but it was nothing but mexicans in there. also, they were staring at us crazy the whole time we were there. i was the only black there with 3 white dudes(and one was ginger, he didn't feel comfortable the whole time). we all really didn't feel that comfortable.

btw, i gotta check whats up with my school dance team
