I had a protein/weight gainer shake with 1850 cals for the regular 3 cup dose. I only used 2 cups thoug. so I'm thinking I got around 1200 cals or so. But man, it made my stomach feel sick for hours on end. I had to end up taking pepto bismol. I'd felt perfectly fine, then 20mins after drinking it, nausea starting creeping in and getting worse and worse till I had to lay down. My stomach is still hurting, though not quite as bad.

I may have to look into a different product, maybe it's just to heavy for my stomach.

Also, when is the best time to take such a shake? Before or after workouts? The shake contains 105% of daily recommended carbs and 50g of protein if you go with 3 cups. But 3 cups is too much for me to drink, 2 and my stomach was already full.

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

First, get the notion of 'recommended daily amount' out of your head because it holds no water neither in the lifting world nor the real world. It's sh it.

Second, commercial weight gainers are garbage, full of ****ty carbs like maltodextrin and dextrose (or other sugars) which will put weight on you in the wrong places if taken any other time but post-workout (and even then there are way better choices).

At 31 you haven't got the metabolism of an 18yo so I can only imagine what taking in 1200 cals (of which how much is protein - about 36g? - the rest is carb calories) will do for you.

So junk carbs, not enough protein and makes you feel like sh it .. I'd go with other options. Use it post-workout until it's gone and then never buy it again.

As a liquid 'weight gainer' meal I'd go with protein+fats - protein powder and eggs is the cheapest and best solution which won't make you fat.

When I first started lifting, I started out with the super-high calorie shakes too. By your description, it sounds like the same brand that I tried. It was like drinking wet cement.

N-Large2 and the BSN shakes are the best I've come across. The BSN shakes are awesome tasting (but expensive).

You could always just space out your servings at every meal.
Instead of three scoops per shake, and drinking that one shake in one sitting. Just add one scoop to your beverage at every meal.
So, if you're eating 3 meals a day, that's 3 scoops.

I rarely bother with shakes anymore.

Is there any particular weight gainer that you would suggest? I probably have a tendency to undereat and I know I'm not getting anywhere near 160 grams of protein a day( I weight 158lbs). Do you have any brand in mind that will give me a good dosage of protein without costing a fortune?

like I said - protein powder and eggs and/or cream if you want pro/fat or protein powder plus oats, fruit if you want protein/carbs. or sub egg whites for some of all of the powder according to your macronutrient requirements.

personally I'd go with the pro/fat shakes as they're still very anabolic but are less likely to make you fat than carbs.
