I seriously hope this question is rhetorical. Jeans and plain shirts are great if you're making minimum wage, in a dead-end job, or have bosses with an extremely liberal management style. Suits are perceived by 99.99999% of the public as being worn by successful individuals - how many fry cooks at McD's do you see wearing a Brooks Brothers tailor-cut suit? How many do you see wearing jeans? 'Nuff said.

As my mentor drilled into me years ago, perception is reality. Even the kid who works at mickey d's could go buy a suit and give the impression that he's successful.
But at a certain level of the game, I'm not sure that it matters much. I know millionaires who go to work in dockers and a polo shirt. At the last company I worked for, the CEO wore polos, the CFO wore silk suits, and the other VP's did that black t-shirt with a sports coat thing, while I wore sweats half the time. Since I received the only bonus in the history of the company (it was a publicly traded company so it had to be approved by the board), I can't say that wearing sweats to work hurt my career.
Right now I'm sitting in my Spokane office wearing khaki shorts and a tye-dyed t, and about the only time you'll see me in a suit is for a) job interviews and b) meetings with clients. At my office in So. Cal., the building itself has a dress code, which I usually adhere to.

I know how to dress in business environment. I see several people who dress quite shabby but they work in high position. I just don't want to over dress that's all. I can't believe the senior people dress like characters from "revenge of the nerds" movie. Their pants are pull up high and mismatch color socks. They dress in this manner all the time. I wonder how these guys attract the women. These guys are actually married. I am shocked when I found out about it.
What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.
You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

As long as you have a job that allows (or expects) you to be eccentric, it can actually be a plus. It just doesn't work if you're a file clerk or janitor, or even a mid-level manager.seanchai said:
