Was this guy trying to pick me up? (no homo)

Ok something happened to me today, and I want to know if I misread the situation or if it's something a straight guy would do.

ok I'm sitting down at a computer in my college computer lab, writing some stuff down. this guy walks up from somewhere and sits at the computer next to me doing his own thing for awhile. then he goes

guy: hey bro can i borrow your pen (i look at him and the way he's looking and asking gives me a wierd vibe), but i give him the pen. he uses it for awhile and gives it back saying thanks.

then he goes

what year are you in?
me: 2nd without looking at him, and staring at the screen
guy: what are you taking
me: bio and psych, again without looking and my face probably looked a little negative
guy: (after i dont respond for a couple secs) ok thanks again
me: yea no problem (and he leaves)

now im just wondering am I right in my judgement that this guy was gay or is this something you would see a straight guy doing @ college. to me this seems like the kind thing a straight guy would say to a girl when trying to pick her up.

Maybe, maybe not. Maybe he just wanted to meet people. A lot of people in college don't have friends so they are just trying to make friends.

I agree with this post, and therefor I am quoting it.

Just because some dude tried to strike up a conversation with you doesn't mean he's trying to hit on you. I'm not sure if you're homophobic or simply have too large of an ego, but from the threatened tone I'm guessing the first. Don't worry mate, when a gay guy sees a straight guy the last thing he's probably thinking is how to get in his pants. IMO they're probably wondering how the hell we go around with our skin and hair looking like that

Chill. He seems like a perfectly normal and polite guy to me, who's just trying to make some friends! I started several conversations today on campus with students waiting for their classes.. Half of them were dudes... Nothing wrong with meeting new people! Don't assume that just cuz a dude wants to start a conversation with you, that he's gay! He is probably in search of friends! I'm trying to build a social circle at school...

If he was tapping morse code on the floor while mouthing he wants you to "bite the pillow" that would indicate he was looking for something more than your pen.
