She informs me that she passed her driving test - me knowing full well it wasn't her first attempt - say oh first time was it? She laughs and says no third. Is this effective, constituting to a subtle neg hit or not?

Mild, subtle neg hit - yes. You can say add "Let me take you for a ride and show you how you are supposed to drive".. and show her how to make fast 180 degree turn (you know how they do it in movies, especially police cars - going in one direction, hit the brakes, turn the wheel and tires screech.. and they are going in teh opposite directly already..)
