Latley I have been working out more and gaining more weight. However I went to purchase new jeans and I found out that my 34 inch waist I usually wore is now feeling too tight to wear and I had to settle for 36 inch one.

I heard that if you gain weight through muscle, your waist should not be affected, could I have been gaining fat instead?

I used to be a skinny guy by the way.

Your waist can gain size like any other area of your body. It could be muscle gain from squats and deadlifts, it could be water and fat gain too...most likely a combination. I know my waist has definately thickened over the years (nothing drastic) to help my body support itself during squats and deads.

This is telling. Unless you are eating a ton, then it's most likely muscle. I've never seen a skinny guy with a 34 inch waist, though; 36s are very loose on me (34s would be right but I'm not getting new jeans before I'm done cutting), and I weigh 217 lbs (at six feet tall)

Bigger obliques (muscles on the side of your torso) will increase your waist size.

building abdominal muscles will increase your waist size too, because the muscles are bulkier and firmer.
