True HD....? smaller the screen....?

I am looking to get a new TV, somewhere around 42".
A guy at an electronics place said that 720 and 1080 on TVs that are that size are to the naked eye not noticable, and that only when going to 50 and higher will the difference really become apparent.
I want to use my TV for games, not into HD tv yet, but is there any truth to this and will my games look better or the same on a tv with only 720?
He said i could save 300 by staying to 720 for a TV that size, my heart was set on a 1080, but if i dont need it then i wont get it.

If you're gonna do double duty as a computer monitor then get the 1080, if it's console games you play then I'm not sure.

Everyone out there gets different visual quality with their eyes.

Some have better than 20/20 vision and some people have regular 20/20 vision and others like me have sh!t vision and need glasses in order to see anything clearly. Well that or lasik surgery or contacts but anyway speaking for myself with glasses on I can tell you when I switched between 720 and 1080 on my Xbox 360 I noticed a huge difference even on a 32 inch LCD HDTV set.

So yeah you have to be careful about listening to anyone's individual opinion when it comes to stuff like this because people that are technology nuts are almost always pushing an agenda these days and want you to buy their favorite things or what works for them but a better way for you to get a better opinion is to ask for a consensus about your particular question before you accept something as an answer to it and if possible an even better way than that is to get access to an HDTV owned by a friend or a store that will let you see how a console like the 360 runs games in various different visual quality modes and judge for yourself if the picture looks better or worse on smaller than 50 inch sized TV's.

So yeah I think the guy was either repeating what he heard or is pushing an agenda and would only like to see gamers play on over large tv sets as he may think thats the only way gaming should be done. It sounds ridiculous to push such an agenda of course whether one is a salesman or not but its how technology nuts are these days.

Personally I find big screen gaming disorienting so you could even say I'm pushing an agenda for smaller tv's. (I'm not but for the sake of argument you could say I am).

Anyway though look for a consensus type of answer or even better see if you can view an HDTV for yourself playing the games at various resolutions and try out both smaller tv's and large tv's like the guy mentioned.

Well for what it's worth the statement the sales guy made is probably pretty true for watching movies or TV programs but not when connected to a source with a lot of fine detail and text.

the guy who works there is a guy a guy i work with knows, he is willing to sell me the tv at cost. he recommended the panasonic th46pz80 and the samsung ln46a530, i am going to be using it for gaming and for my laptop, and in time adding HD TV.
