When i'm doing inclined dumbell press, I can never do the first rep, I need a spot to help me get it all the way up. After that, I can do em fine, I can bring my elbows past my back and do everything right form-wise, but I just cant get the first one up there. I rest the weights on my knees and then use my legs to bring em up and everything.

This is probably due to a weakness in one of my muscles, probably a shoulder muscle. Anyone have any idea what muscle it is, and what I exercise I should do to strengthen it?

If you got stronger, then the beginning of your rep should be no problem as well. The top half of your rep is generally the strongest.

You should never need a spot for a first rep of dumbbell presses. I've noticed that those guys that need the help on the first rep are not going down all the way. SO if you can't get the first one up, that means you're not going down far enough.

I don't htink I've ever needed a spot on the first rep, even when I was doing sets of 4 or 6 (to failure).

Only time i'd recommend getting the first rep up is in military presses. Getting 90 lb dumbbells up from your knees can be a pain in the a$$>

I also have never needed a spotter on anything dumbell related, and NEVER on my first rep.

You should try to get a video clip, so we can see your form and such, to help determine the problem.

Same thing happens to me. From what I can tell, it's because on the first rep my back isn't in the correct position on the bench. When I do finally get that first rep up I adjust, which makes the rest of the reps easier.

I'm guessing it is probably the same with you.
