I've tried to do this before in my AFC days and it never works, creates drama, and is just generally a bad thing to do.

I haven't had the luxury of that problem. That's a good problem to have if she is asking you. Typically it will take 3 months before she asks you, in which case the man should resist (they go crazy when this happens - I never had a woman blow up my phone like one girl 2 years back who wanted to get engaged). The closest I came was (after 18 months) I said "Ok, maybe we'll get engaged someday".
