"You'll Never Feel READY to Walk Over"

Next Monday you'll feel more confident. After the gym you'll feel more confident. After one more drink you'll feel more confident. After you get a better haircut, a better jacket, a better job.

You've been "getting ready" for two years.

She's standing ten feet away right now. She'll be gone in four minutes. No amount of preparation will manufacture the courage that only comes from moving your feet.

Walk over. Stumble through the first sentence. Let it be clumsy. Let it be imperfect. You will feel more alive in those ten seconds than you have all month.

Very brief background: I met this chick at a party last Friday, turns out we have very similar interests (travelling, hiking, backpacking) and even bigger coincidence, I'm leaving this Sunday for a month trip backpacking across Ireland and Scotland, and she's leaving Monday for a backpacking across Scotland. We've already determined our schedule won't match, so no meeting there.

Anyways we exchanged emails in case we have a schedule change, but I also got her number, under the pretext of grabbing a beer with her when she's back from her trip so we can exchange stories.

Finally, Monday (two days after I met her) when I finally had a bit of time, I sent her an email to give her my email address, and wishing her a nice trip, nothing more. No reference to how nice it was to meet her or to the future beer or whatnot.

This is her reply:

Hello Nicolas,

First off, I must say I really appreciated meeting you, you managed to grab my interest... Blahblah non-important stuff about her schedule not matching mine... Anyways, I'll gladly contact you back when I return on the 25th, considering I can't wait to know more about your trip in Ireland! I'll keep in touch while in Scotland from times to times ;)

Normally I don't really put much thought into stuff like this, but apparently now I am. Reply or no, and what format-ish? I'm not very good with email game

"I just moved here from Florida."

That sentence contains at least five follow-up questions she WANTS you to ask. Where in Florida? What brought you here? How long have you been in the area? What do you miss? How does it compare to here?

She handed them to you on a silver platter. And you said, "Oh cool. I come here every week. I love this band. Ummm... pretty crowded tonight."

She smiled politely. Nodded. And never texted you back.

I was that guy for years. Talking too much. Listening too little. Panicking about my next sentence while she was literally feeding me the answers.

Then I found 22 rules that fixed the whole thing. Rule number one: shut up and listen. She'll tell you exactly what to say.

I think that at some point during your trip you should send her a short email to keep the flame going. It seems as though she's really into you and is very excited to trade stories with you when the both of you get back. You don't want that excitement for you to die down and that's why a short email will keep the flame burning. It should be a quick one, something that brings her back to your conversation. Something like " Oh just saw this amazing (blank) and it reminded me of what we talked about that. Remind me to tell you when we get back. Bye!"

What that does is show her that you are having an amazing time, it's short so you're not coming off needy, it'll keep the excitement going and now she's going to be wondering, what did he see that reminded him?" You left her hanging, waiting for more.

Short and quick and fire will continue to burn.
