There are a few ways you can be self employed

-Become proficient in web, app development and win clients by going to business events, email business's, also allow people to find you by being on local directories, business listings, your own website etc
-Act as a project manager and outsource your development
-Go on freelancing websites (fivver, freelancer, upwork, rent a coder etc) and become succesful
-Develop specialised software (POS systems, managements system etc)

-Develop a good app

You can also be successful as a SAP consultant.

Also as an IT consultant.

I've heard someone who is self employed in IT security, not sure if he does penetration testing by going to companies etc.

Good luck

That's good.

Even better if you could also provide some links where one could learn what you mentioned.

What do you do?

A friend got going with ecommerce. Timing is everything as he met others to go under their wing. He learned. Another Buddy is learning video editing and has a dev background.

Don't forget making coding courses. Seems everyone on youtube is doing this nowadays.

Yeah man I think we are on the same path here. And better, I am coding in Java finally! My job had an internal opening and its looking like I might jump into that. In the meantime I am learning spring framework as well...this is good for learning how to actually impliment design patterns in java ( factory etc) so I think its a two for one. But yeah you said it right, make web app and touch the entire stack all the way to AWS. AWS is hot right now, and it seems its hard to find people who are good at this.

IT, security, AWS would be cool to get into.

Best of luck. keep me up to date with how you do. I think in a little bit of time I could do some consulting work. If your keen on tackling projects for some $, I would be down to do that

Hey man,

Thanks for the update.

Congrats on coding in Java, you really have worked hard to get there.

Yeah security is getting big and will only get bigger.

Amazon web services like security there is a need for skilled individuals.

Also someone told postman is important and api development is getting big.

Thanks I'll let you know.

Check out pluralsight, treehouse, Lynda and the like.

There is a need for IT security professionals.

I may even go down the consultancy route giving people advice on how to get into IT jobs and give them the know how etc with uni students paying fees since I've actually had interviews and many uni students struggle with getting in.

most popular programming language now is (since recently) and will be for long javascript.

a lot of people start companies and they all need websites. you build fancy looking websites in javascript.

also javascript is usually not taught at universities so they wont always require a IT degree from you

that being said i think javascript is boring

what you can also do is find ugly websites of companies in your town and offer them better website through email

Thanks for the tip, appreciated!

You're exactly right, Javascript and the like such as react, angular etc will continue to rise and be popular.

I know someone who wins clients and employs people from India cheap to do the coding.

You can also run a IT support business managed network, systems, providing technical help.

Also being a pen tester for cyber security-self employed or even contracting.

You can advertise your services on eBay, that's what I'm looking to do.

I've started advertising on Ebay a month ago but nothing yet. Maybe not the best platform since I've got no ratings and testimonials yet.

I'll be seeking freelancing, contracting opportunities with IT companies with web, software development.

Freelance penetration testing is a growing field, very lucrative, and if you know anything about web development it's super easy to get into (and make more $$$ from per hour than web development). Look up "awesome pen testing" or "awesome security" lists on Github and other similar things and with a bit of practice you can more or less automate the basics and have a pen test for a small app done in an hour, report and all.

Make sure you can provide good looking reports and have these with you when you pitch prospects. Remember - 99% of the time, the client will be looking for you to sign something off as "secure" and they want you to find a few minor things wrong so it looks real. They aren't interested in a technical colonoscopy; don't give them one. The 1% that remain will have in-house security teams anyway.

Thanks for this information.

I'll try this out, so I should really do pen testing for apps, web applications? For doing a network system and wireless test do I need knowledge in networks?
