There exists one thing, one simple concept, that you absolutely must possess in order to be a self-actualized DJ. If you do not have this thing, then you will never be DJ, no matter how much "****y/funny," "deep inner game," "apocalypse openers," or panty-melting techniques you have. It is the difference between keyboard jockies and recovered AFCs. It is the difference between success and failure.
It is volition. The will to act.
Do not mistake what I am trying to say here. This isn't about motivation, planning, thinking about what you're going to do to get where you want to be, pumping yourself up, or any of that. All of that comes before the most vital step - taking action.
It seems almost silly to talk about, but converting motivation into willpower is something that I struggle with, and I know other guys on here do, too. What I am beginning to understand is that taking action feels differently than I expect it to. I think most of us on this site are pretty smart guys - especially the keyboard jockies. I think alot of us end up outsmarting ourselves. We are so comfortable with the inner, mental world, that we get to thinking things through and imagining how tough it will be to start cleaning up the house, or to get out to a club tonight, or whatever other task you've been meaning to get to for weeks.
Taking action is not about thinking, dreaming, researching, or any of that stuff - it has very little to do with the mental sphere. You can't rationalize it, think it through, or any of that. Forget what you've heard about visualizing success, because if you're still struggling to get started, "visualization" will just become a bull**** time waster that you'll use as an excuse to keep you from acting. Real, external action is pure, unfiltered volition. You want things to be a certain way, and you will them to be so.
As soon as you allow yourself to think "man, I really need to get to the gym today" or "I should probably start on my homework," the thinking part of the equation is over. Done. Full stop. Stop thinking about it immediately and just do it. You will feel alot better about yourself, and you will begin to understand how taking action really works.
I'm still finding my way with this, and I've had good days and bad days. On the good days, though, something special happens. Menial tasks that I should be doing every day (making my bed and dumb stuff like that) become automatic. I see the bed is unmade, I think to myself that I should make it, and I just go and make it. Things I've been meaning to do for weeks get done. Putting off homework to jack around on the Internet or playing video games suddenly seems stupid.
I'm rapidly coming to realize that volition is the thing that gets people from AFC to DJ. You must act. There is no way around it. It starts with getting basic things on track, forming the right habits, and getting used to willing things done, and slowly but surely, you become a DJ.
I've been off-track again for a little over a week. Today was almost a total waste. It's time for a change - I had willpower a little over a week ago, and it is time to reclaim it. Tomorrow, I will wake up and take action. No wasting time or allowing myself to slip into self-pitying mindsets. Before I hit the bed tomorrow night, I will come to this thread to write about my success or failure, and then get up the next day and do it all again. I invite you all to do the same - whether you are well on your way to DJ or a keyboard jockey who has been lurking for two or three years to no avail.
You can't change without taking action. Let's turn this thread into a journal of action and pure willpower. Post what you've gotten accomplished each day, if it's as monumental as finally getting off your duff and getting a job, or as seemingly trivial as cleaning the windshield of your car. No task is too small. This is the "getting things done" thread.
Now let's get out there and prove to ourselves that we're not going to allow ourselves to shrivel up and accept mediocrity and AFCness because we didn't have the willpower to turn our lives around. All of us have the willpower. We just have to use it.
It is volition. The will to act.
