Synthetic diamonds are interesting. They are valued at what they can get someone to pay. So the smallest stones are about a grand, but a giant one is like two grand.
At one point, fake diamonds were indistinguishable from real ones, after they figured out to include a few flacks of carbon so that it was not too perfect. Then DeBeers instituted a microscopic coding program for all diamonds. Every stone now has the equivalent of a serial number. That's the only way to tell a real one from a fake.
