Researchers at the School of Psychiatry of St. Andrew’s University in Scotland made a computer drawing of a perfect man’s face thought to be irresistible to most women. The face is a composite image made up of the photographs of 12 students who consented to the use of their pictures for the benefit of science. Thirty four female students in their early twenties rated the attractiveness of each face on a scale of 1 to 7. The final composite was made by proportionally mixing features of all 12 photos.

The final composite stands out by its pronounced femininity. The modern woman does not find attractive neither facial hair nor a strong chin on a man’s face. She does not seem to like any other features traditionally associated with a “real macho man.”

There is a set of attractive female faces/unattractive faces and attractive male faces/unattractive faces.

For a female having an unattractive face is pretty much the end of the line. There is nothing she can do to make herself more attractive and select a better mate. However she can still succeed by becoming a nicer person and more generous when it comes to sex.

Men on the other hand having an unattractive face is not the end of the world. I wouldn't call those unattractive faces in fact they are pretty average. Those men however can become more masculine and be more social and still snag a pretty HB, its just that they need to work a bit harder at it.

Actually I remember reading from some studies (probably just the same german study posted by DJDamage) that an attractive face has well defined jawlines (which is common knowledge), basically in other words, faces that are lean, whick don't have too much fat. When you actually think of of the good-looking people you know, you will realize that this theory actually stands.

The face from the link posted by Desdinova definitely is too fat. But at the same time you can see the big potential if the extra fat goes away. Anyway it's just a virtual computer-generated face so it doesn't matter right?

The perfect male face: along with the rest of you, I think those Scottish scientists got it wrong. (Sure, maybe for a Scot that's the best face they can hope for....) That's no reason to reject the whole pursuit though, of course. That German study DJDamage posted is interesting.

Explanation for those newcomers to the research, who may wonder about this scientific pursuit:

Like Dr. Marquardt writes in regard to the Beauty Mask, when we see beauty in facial symmetry we are really showing our appreciation for the human archetype. This is logical: we recognize other members of our species mostly by sight as we don't have the developed sense of smell of e.g. cats and dogs. Since we need to interact with other members of the species to survive, it is our instinct to be drawn to the archetype, which rests on proportions made up by the stable number 1.618, the Golden Cut.

The human facial archetype is in fact female - remember that even with men, the fetus was a female before blessed with that hardy dose of testosterone. That is why even women consider the female face to be beautiful, whereas men are much more indifferent to other male faces.
The face turns male by the addition of traits that signal strength and aggression - the qualities needed for hunting and fighting. Such traits are e.g. more hawkish eyebrows.

Facial symmetry is not the only thing attractive in the face, of course. We also appreciate signs of youth, as youth equals health, which is a survival trait. And men appreciate if the perfect female facial symmetry is modified by paedomorphic traits - childlike traits - as they signal the young age that means a woman is more likely to be untouched, so any children coming out of her are more likely to be ours after we have slept with her.

Evolutionary psychology sure is interesting.

I write this for the benefit of those who are terrified of the thought that we may actually consider one face less attractive than another, through no fault of the owner of that face - the horror. Nobody ever said nature was fair. It is just nature.
