Master Don Juan
Resurrecting this thread because I just watched the Secret last night. Back in 08 I had no clue what you guys were talking about in this thread. Now it's like ahhh ok
Just wanted to add my thoughts
I'm not buying the whole Quantum Physics thing and the whole pseudoscientific explanation for why it works. It turns the Law of Attraction into a magic pill (which it isn't) and totally negates the fact our faculities have to be in alignment with our thoughts in order for us to get what we want. It's also the reason the Law of Attraction gets laughed at. Something is not scientifically proven until formulas are created that consistently dictate the results. Nobody's quantified how these thoughts of ours supposedly spread out. Until then, it's just speculation and pseudoscience.
Other than that, it's solid because it's basically a renewed perspective on expectancy theory and self-fullfilling prophecy.
Off the top of my head I can list a few self help books that embody elements of the Law of Attraction.
- The first 2 Habits from Steven Covey's 7 Habits
- The visualization aspect of George Leonard's 5 steps to Mastery
- Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich, which is basically the Law of Attraction applied to wealth/success
- Any book about positive thinking
- Any book about defeating limiting beliefs
In the end I'd argue that the only thing you can control with your thoughts is yourself, as opposed to thinking you can directly affect the world (which is the what The Secret is insisting you can do). Still, by controlling your thoughts, considering how reactive most people on earth are, you're able to make your way through life in ways most people can't.
