Maybe. Intelligence could translate into money and power. Back then, women were much more dependent on having a man to support them. To be in the house of a rich and powerful man was about as high a position that they could rise to.

Believe it or not I know this is outside the box but if you value good ice cream back then in the mid 1800's you were intelligent. How neglected is ice cream now a days where we don't even value it. At Mcdonalds you can get it for a dollar.

He doesn't really focus on his exploits, but you can tell that he is experienced with people and is respected. Also gives a good insight of how life was lived back then.
People seemed to be a lot more friendlier towards one another. Nowadays, everyone is impersonal, perhaps even scared of each other. You see a man walking alone in a park and most people scream "Predator!". Back then, from his account, it was a way different.

The language is a bit dated, but it's not that bad. Definitely recommend reading it
