I don't think you should go alone unless you are really good at meeting new people and approaching strangers, i think the first time you should go with a friend to check out the place, if there is a friendly mood and enviroment you could go alone if you wanted to 
at least that's what has worked for me, i always prefer to go with someone else though, but that's just me i guess
