Day 1)
OK so I decided the best place for making eye contact and generally encountering friendly people would be somewhere a bit touristy. Londoners can be very wary of each other so I figured I'd get better response from tourists. With this in mind I headed to Camden market. Normally I think this would have been the perfect place but today was freezing cold and raining so people weren't exactly looking around smiling and saying Hi to strangers!!! My strategy was to try and look any HB's in the eye, and when they looked back to just smile and say Hi, which sounded pretty easy in theory. When I did it though nobody looked back! they just looked down or the other way! after about an hour or so I started getting fed up and just deliberately standing in peoples ways or like accidentally moving the same way as them so we'd bump into each other! a few girls looked up and I even got a smile back

this only bought limited success though and I felt like a public nuisance so I switched back to just looking at people, with slightly better success this time and a few more Hi's!
Eventually though I got a bit fed up with the time taken and decided to be more forceful and actually talk to people, then they'd have to look at me! I saw a few tourist girls eating lunch by a food stall and decided to go and ask what they were having etc. As I got close one of them was taking a photo of the other, so I walked up and said, "hey why don't I take a photo of you all together" they looked a bit scared but also agreed and when I started pushing them closer together and saying they'd look good in the photo they started giggling

so I took the photo and feeling victorious headed to get some lunch myself. There was a cute Japanese girl sat on her own so I went and sat at her table with my lunch and started chatting. Well I asked a few questions which she didnt understand! then wished her happy new year as its the only thing I can say in Japanese! I dont think she understood that even! the conversation was a bit lame as we couldnt understand each other! but I was pleased with myself for making the effort which I would never normally do. An angry looking Japanese man came over and dragged her away shortly aferwards but it wasnt going anywhere anyway! so by the end of the day I'd managed a total of 11 Hi's! which I was pretty pleased with. There had been a few more where I'd sort of chickened out half way through, they probably looked more like a nervous twitch than a greeting though so I'mnot counting them!!!!
All in all I'm really pleased with the first day and I'm just hoping I can make enough free time this week to get the 39 Hi's out that I still need!
