Correct me if I am wrong, but if 1600 mexicans fell ill with swine flu, and 100 died, is that not a very good survival rate for a "deadly" flu in a country that does not exactly have top notch medicine? (1500/1600 = 94%).

Also, correct me if I am wrong, but if 20 people fell ill with swine flu in the US and all 20 survived (and only 1 had to be hospitalized), is that not a GREAT survival rate (100%) against a "deadly" flu?

Don't 40,000 people die every year in the US from the NORMAL flu?

If I went to visit a friend in lets say Florida, and caught the flu from him, then came back to work and infected 5 of my co-workers, and we all survived, how is that different than what happened to people who came back from mexico and infected schoolmates (who all survived)???

How is this swine flu any deadlier than a regular flu just based on statistics??

6% is pretty bad when normal flu is around less than 1% (and it's reported that healthy adults are being killed, not the usual elderly/frail) Equally, the full statistics aren't being reported as they aren't 'confirmed' but eyewitnesses are saying that Mexico City's health authorities are completely overwhelmed.

It has the potential to be real bad - chance of the virus mutating is high. We are overdue for serious influenza pandemic. If it isn't this one, then another one will rear its ugly head.

It is being blown out of proportion, but you can't blame the media, it's had to report the feckless Recession every day for god knows how many months. But better to be aware than to be in the dark - SARS was stopped in its tracks because the world's health authorities were mobilised in time.

Also lets not forget that those thousands of people that die every year because of normal flu, are either old or immunecompromised(ie cancer/Aids).

The majority of those killed in Mexico were of young healthy indvidual's in their teens, twenties and thirties and that is disturbing.

Not enough is known about the virus to determined yet how harmeful it can get and that's why people are panicking.

I believe more people die from normal influenza, common colds, etc. If only people would get so careful with the AIDS situation etc. Here in Mexico you don't see much people in public transportation, some people really don't greet with hands. Ignorants, you don't get it by touching hands, you get it if you have your hand infected and touch some "liquid" part of your head (eyes, nose, mouth).

Lets assume this thing sweeps the world. Mexico may not be first world but it is much more developed than much of the world really, so lets say world wide the death rate is 10%. For example I don't think Africans with AIDS would survive this very well.

There are 6,706,993,152 people in the world, probably a bit more now.
We're talking about 670,699,315, in other words over six hundred ****ing million people dead. Hell even if it's only 5%, that's 300 million, or taking out the entire population of the US from the world. And as mentioned, these would be all types of people, including young healthy adults, not just sick and elderly who would be dying anyway.

Now of course infection rates wouldn't be 100%, but lets be honest, the flu is pretty virulent. Even if only 10% of the world gets infected, this would be crazy.

In other words, if this thing sweeps the world, no, they're not blowing it out of proportion. This is scary stuff man.

Further, consider the US hospitalization rate.. 1/20 = 5% so far. Granted this is too small a sample to extrapolate, but for curiosity's sake.

US population 303,824,640, 5% hospitalized = 15,191,232 Do you really think the US has 15 million spare hospital beds sitting around, as well as respirators and doctors and nurses to tend to all those people?

I agree with you, the news tends to blow things up to boost ratings, but frankly in this case, I don't know why the reaction so far is this muted. Most likely the government is just hesitant to cause panic as that would kill any hopes of economic recovery.

You guys wanna know something? 12 years ago in this country there was a flu called "Duck's Embrace". The symptoms were high fever, joint pain, vomit, diahrrea, respiratory issues(all in all, same symptoms ). The mortality rate was also higher (all in all, same mortality rate), but still low and it was rumoured to come from farms. What if it is the same? the flu dissapeared after several months and nothing really happened.

Second, dont you think it's interesting that all the deaths have been in the Mexico City DC area? Hey, the air quality over there is so damn bad, it's a surprise those mexicans arent dying from it alone. A recent study found out that the air in that city had small particles of feces.
