Week I:
WEIGHTS & EXERCISE
Weights:

Why do Weights?
Weight training. It's been called a vain, boring, silly past time- especially by skinny white "funny" guys. Weight lifting has an air of self-loving about it. I'm sure the idea of guys with arms like baloons posing in lube, their steroid-shrunk manhood cowering under an tiny spandex napkin doesn't really appeal to most of us.

Well screw that. Weight lifting isn't the forte of lubed up freaks. Weight lifting is really the speciallity of teenage guys. No other group of people has the same chemical make up, all that testosterone and growth hormone pumping through your veins makes you all ideal for packing on muscle. Perhaps that is reason enough: take advantage of your natural skills...

Of course, there is a very simple, very good reason... weight lifting is useful! How many times have you heard being weak is a great characteristic?! Duh! Weight lifting is a healthy thing to do, it lets you lift heavy things, beat up other guys trying to steal your stuff, run faster, it helps prevent injury- for ****s sake it's just bloody useful! Strong people live better! There, if that isn't motivation enough, I don't know what is:).

One small note: doing weights that are too heavy, especially when you are young, or taking supplements incorrectly - like taking any sort of performance enhancing steroids- can and probably will have a negative effect. Exercise a degree of common sense people, there is nothing dangerous about weight training, there is about throwing a 60kg lump of metal above your head. Just be smart, nuff said.

Basics:
Weight training is a bit missleading as a title. It is 50% training, 50% diet. You do both, you get results, you feel good. Sort out both with equal vigor.

Weights can be expencive, so all the advice is geared towards a teenager, in his room, with a pair of dumbells, and perhaps a bench and bar bell. You don't need to go get an expensive gym membership. If you can, get access to your school/college weights room. If not, I suggest purchacing a simple weights bench, a bar bell and a dumbell. It's money well spent. You'll need about 40-60 kgs of weights. If you can't afford all of this in one go, just buy it bit by bit. It is worth the money.

A quick definition: A rep is a movement e.g. one lift of a dumbell. A set is a number of repititions. For most exercises, you will have about 4-8 reps in a set. When recording what you lift, set it out like: 4/8/40, meaning 4 sets, at 8 repititions each, at 40kgs of weight.

Applictaion:
I'm going to try not to just send you to other sources in this course, but all you need to know is in the Health and Fitness forum. Sorry, not going to spoon feed you all the way.

The plan? Read the stickies, and sort out your routine. The main parts are the chest, legs, and back. You also need to include your arms, stomach, and shoulders. Two main parts people forget that need seperate exercises are the calves and forearms. Get something for all of them and you're ready to go.

Train heavy, and at even lower sets than it says in the stickies: 4-5 sets. You need to shock your body into putting on muscle (and mass).

Remember you'll need an 8 week log, to record what you do each week. Remember, the 8th week is a rest week. You will be doing 3 days of weight training a week- you wont put on muscle if you don't rest.

Really, the information is on this very site, you just need to read and ask, then put in the effort.
Thus, the challenges for week one:
Challenge 1: Get access to weight lifting equipment.
By buying, joining a gym, by hook or crook get out there and sort it out!
Challenge 2: Go to fitness board and work out a routine, print it out in the form of an 8 week log, and attach it to your board under the SELF side.
Remember the board from the organisation post? You will be using it a lot. Go and sort this out as soon as possible. Don't be deterred by people questioning your determination, or by saying your routine is flawed. It probably is. Follow the advice to make it better.

http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html is a great site for finding out what exercises to do with what you have. Use this and the resources on the Health forum to succeed in challenge 2.

Exercise

Crap! I was really hoping for help on this topic!
Only advice I can give is that your exercise will be far more effective if it's something you enjoy. Take martial arts for instance- most guys think whacking things is cool, so you're more likely to keep witha thai-boxing class than dragging yourself to the running track every morning. Still, if you can get motivated for running, that's even better.

For exercise you will want a log like the one for weight training. Again, go to the health forums for advice.

Side Topic: Nutrition, Cooking & Health
Supplements:
A key supplement for the above is Whey protein. It's absorbed quickly by the body and is generally funky stuff. You'll be drinking in excess of 4 scoups of the stuff a day. Problem is- it tastes gross. Solution, chocolate flavour is probably the best, and I think it tastes a lot better when it is put with water. Make it manageable, grin and stomach it.

It has been said that with all the chemicals pumping around a teenager's body a good diet and enough sleep (you are getting 8 hours DEEP SLEEP a night, right?) will do more good than powdered supplements. That's true. No point in spending all that money without sorting out the basics. Again, good reccomendations for supplements are in the stickies and from the members of the health forum. To tell the truth, if you are all as skint as I am, all the creatine and other stuff just isn't worth the money. My advice is to get some chocolate flavoured (tastes the best) protein shake and multi-vits, make sure your diet is good, and sleep enough. If you want to branch out, that's great, all the info is there for you.

You will also need (and should be taking already) multi-vits/codliver oil. Just cover yourself for most vits and minerals.

Challenege 3: Purchace and start taking supplements correctly, as advised by members of the health and fitness forums.

Healthy Eating:
"You are what you eat". No **** there. For the next 9 months, with the exception of big parties, lets cut the crap out of our diets:

No fast food.
No fizzy drinks.
No smoking.
No habitual/daily drinking.
No chocolate.
No sweets.

Lower amounts of sugar.
Lower amounts of salt.

More potatos.
More brown bread.
More nuts.
More greens.
More fruit.
More eggs.
A LOT MORE WATER.

Also, if you are fat eat less. If you are skinny eat more. This is the basis of weight change, never forget it.

Challenge 4: Make changes to your eating habits. ADVANCED CHALLENGE: Give up a vice (smoking, weed, chocolate)

Cooking:

Yes- Guys cook too. If fact, a hell of a lot of guys cook very well. Why learn? Duh! You get to make yummy stuff! We all love yummy stuff!

It is pretty suprising that a lot of young guys and girls don't know the very basics of cooking. I'm not going to give you the details of boiling an egg or cooking pasta, but if you've never learnt- ask your mum or get a cook book. You should at least be able to make a fry up, pancakes, boil an egg, make pasta and a pasta sauce, and stir fry. If not LEARN!

Here are some ideas to give you a creative spark, especially if you have company. Hell, a girl with a grumpbling stomach just isn't sexy...

Sushi:
Simple and makes you look cultured.

Step 1: Making sumeshi (sushi rice)
Get 400ml of rice. Stick in cold water for 15 minutes to wash it, then drain off the water.
Put washed rice in a saucepan with 460ml of water. Boil it up for about 5 mins, then lower the heat and let it simmer for 10 mins, or until all the water is gone. Leave the lit on, and let it sit off the heat for 10-15 mins. While it is sitting, make the vinegar dressing with 3 tablespoons of Japanese rice vinegar, 2 1/2 tablespoons of sugar, and 2 tea spoons of salt. Mix that lot in a bowel. Put the rice in a big shallow bowl, and add the vinegar dressing. Fold the dressing into the rice. Bingo!

Step 2: Making norimaki (simple sushi!)
Get the rice from above and put it on a sheet of nori (sushi) seaweed. Spread it out to about 1 1/5 cm from the seaweed edge. Put a filling down the middle (salmon, cucumber and wasabi anyone?). Roll it up and cut it into pieces! Easy sushi!

BBQ Anything.
We all love BBQ.

For simple BBQ anything make a sauce out of pretty much everything you have, to taste. Tomato ketchup, brown sauce, chilli sauce, tabasco, lee & perins, mustard, garlic, salt, pepper, soy sauce, and some sesemee seeds. Mix and put on said meet, and leave over-night. Grill/BBQ next day and voila!

Stir fry
Quick, looks cool.

YOU MUST GET ALL THE INGREDIENTS YOU WANT TO COOK READY BEFORE YOU HEAT UP THE WOK! This is the big thing about stir frying anything. After that it's easy. heat up ground nut oil (peanut or sesemee will do) with garlic and ginger, then when it is hot cook the meat you wnat (cut up into small pieces) untill it changes color. Take out and put aside. Add the onions. stir and fry for 2 mins. Add other greens. Stir and fry for 2 mins. Add meat again and cook the whole lot until the meat is done. Serve with rice and your done.

There, three dishes to try out, and very simple too.

Challenge 5: Make something from the above. Advanced: Get a cook book and try to cook at least 3-4 times a week over the next 9 weeks.

"How I Made Sure No Woman Ever Friend-Zoned Me Again"

She calls you when her car breaks down. When she needs help moving. When some guy she's actually dating treats her badly.

You're the listener. The reliable one. The guy who would treat her so much better, if she'd just open her eyes.

She won't. You trained her to see you as the low-effort option — the friend who requires zero risk and zero investment. Every favor dug the hole deeper.

The "22 Rules" break the pattern. You'll stop auditioning for a role she already cast and become the man she chases instead. It starts with Rule 1.

Ok, this is enough to get you started on the above topics. Why are they a bit lacklustre? Well, yesterday I had a Southern Comfort virus. I feel like ****. Plus no one helped me! I sent PMs to all you guys but I got noooooo help! Whatsoever! Perhaps you just didn't get it in on time. Please then post below, I can only do so much!

Grrr, hard having a real life.

Anyway, the point is still there- the challenges. Go for them. If you manage to do all five in this week that's fantastic. Some of them do need money though, but the main thing is that you get them done!

Again, sorry, but my life has to take preference over this. I hate whisky.

If I'm correct, you are leaving an essential and pretty much a must if you want optimum results when it comes to weight lifting and that is stretching. You should stretch them muscles, especially to the beginner's or people who haven't picked up a weight in a good while. It would suck if you blew out a hamstring, or ripped a muscle or experience cramping and other sh*t, making your lifting experience a more painful one and with not as good results as if you were stretching.

Another thing, I'd recommend including push-ups, sit-ups, and pull ups. They help out.

Also, make sure that if you are getting into any exercise and conditioning regimen and are serious about it, keep yourself replenished with fluids, especially in these summer months.

Another thing, DO NOT expect to be Arnold overnight. your body just won't do this. You have to have patience and determination if you want results.

umm, and thats about it.

[arnold]You nutrition is good for puny little girls. With my help you get really big, real fast.[arnold]

Ok. As I PM'd you yesterday I was writing some stuff about nutrition and I finished a little bit of it, only whey and creatine. The best info on the net ;)

I think I'll make a thread about it in the Health and Fitness section and add more supplements later on. And all you have to do, is to add the link to the first page. Convenient, isn't it?

[edit] Here it is, I have written some info about whey and creatine, but there is going to be more on CLA, glutamine, vit C.

4 scoops a day? I've been doing one on workout days, I'll up it to two-three every day...the container says 1-3 a day. Whey Protein is good but real food is generally better (check the bodybuilding.com boards for some really wicked awesome stuff, tips, routines, etc.)

Also, I started this about a month ago, so here are a few things I've learned:

1) If you fail to plan you plan to fail. GET A SOLID ROUTINE! Mon-Wed-Fri, no exceptions, and go at a certain time of day, etc.

2) Using the following sites, print out your routine plus pictures(if you want) and text of the technique for exercises.

http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html

http://www.bsu.edu/webapps/strengthlab/home.htm

It becomes a very useful resource in the gym.

3) Talk to the people at the gym, don't be afraid to ask someone to spot you/work in, etc

4) One of the gym staff advised me to wear a weight belt for things like deadlifts, squats...things that can mess up your lower back if you're not careful. If you aren't sure what a weight belt is, look around the gym, there are always a few people wearing them, they're large belts usually made of tan-colored leather.

5) Enjoy it! This is overlooked all the time, but if you see the gym as a chore and not a challenge, you'll be one unhappy swole chappie.

And if you idiotically bought strawberry flavored (bleeeecccchhh!!! ) protien like I did a couple weeks ago when I started this stuff, mix it with gatorade and hold your nose, then wash it down with some milk. Still nasty, but it tastes a helluva lot better than mixing it with milk. Chocolate seems like a pretty good flavor, and one of my friends also said vanilla tastes decent with milk. I have yet to try that though.

"You'll Never Feel READY to Walk Over"

Next Monday you'll feel more confident. After the gym you'll feel more confident. After one more drink you'll feel more confident. After you get a better haircut, a better jacket, a better job.

You've been "getting ready" for two years.

She's standing ten feet away right now. She'll be gone in four minutes. No amount of preparation will manufacture the courage that only comes from moving your feet.

Walk over. Stumble through the first sentence. Let it be clumsy. Let it be imperfect. You will feel more alive in those ten seconds than you have all month.

From an Army book.
-------------------------------------

On breakfast:
Breakfast is the most imporatnt meal of the day, so don't skip on it for an extra half hour in bed. On days with lots of excersize, get as much food down you as possible before you start. Eat little and often, BEFORE you get tired, as a physically exhausted body will reject food and you will end up being sick.

Hope you don't mind my two pennies cloud but looks like you need help on exercise

Exercise

Improving your fitness.

Only you know how fit you are. The first step is to be honest, how fit are you? defin this then work out a target. Next examine your daily routine, diet and lifestyle. Drinking late nights may have to be sidelined for a while.

Checklist for fitness.

Do you excersize?
Could you run 5 miles at a steady pace, keeping your breathing under control?
Do you drink more than two pints of beer a day? (or equivalent)
Is your weight comparable with your height?
Do you smoke?
Do you take drugs?

The easiest way to lose calories is walking or running. So from now on where-ever you go, you're going to walk. Wether that be to school or into town.
Alternativly you can bike it, cycling is another healthy way to burn away the calories.

If you are serious about this you need to set yourself up a timetable for !running!

e.g. here is mine:-

Monday 3 mile jog
Tuesday Rest
Wednesday 5 Mile jog
Thursday Swim 10 lengths
Friday Rest
Saturday 5 mile jog
Sunday Rest

It is loosely based on SAS training regimes. Do whatever you feel comfortable with, try some hill reps (sprint up, jog down), skipping in your back garden until you are dripping with sweat! as long as you get your heart beating at least 3 times a week, you will become fit. it could be as simple as:

Monday Jog 1 mile
Wednesday skip for half an hour in your back garden
Friday Swim

I hope that helps, sorry to "steal your thunder" cloud

p.s. remember to warm up.

cloud, i think you've organised this week nicely. i'm going to give the cooking a shot most nights. i'm one of those guys who can only make pasta and can cook a nice curry or whatever if i feel like it, but i cannot be fvcked getting the ingredients. *bends over* i need a fvckin skelp this week

need2bpimpin, i've never actually made a proper plan, which is probably costing me some inconsistency. i definitely lift my 4days of the week and eat "pretty well" but that isn't going to cut it. iM getting the pen and paper out

slimijs, that was a smashing post. well done on getting all that info. i'm taking creatine just now, but i don't think i'm using it properly. i didn't attempt a loading phase, and am only doing it gradually. i've been using it only 4times a week, immediately after working out. should i increase this to 7times a week?

johnny football hero, in that army book extract it says to eat little often. does that mean for the entire morning? and is that the best way for bulking?

i can't believe i thought i could play golf 4hours a day, 7 days a week while bulking up and not lose many calories. i was wondering why i was looking ripped lol. golf once a week now for me.

tyte eyes, do you stretch after lifting?

Looks like cloud is busy at the moment. So let's try to help him with thw summer games as much as we can.

Challenge 1: Get access to weight lifting equipment.

I'll do that sometime later this week, when I have my paycheck. I need to buy me some supplements and start becoming my muscle back again. I think I'll get some creatine.

Challenge 2: Go to fitness board and work out a routine, print it out in the form of an 8 week log, and attach it to your board under the SELF side.

I forgot to make those tables  Maybe you can make one is excel or somethin'?

Challenege 3: Purchace and start taking supplements correctly, as advised by members of the health and fitness forums.

As advised by me, *****!

Challenge 4: Make changes to your eating habits. ADVANCED CHALLENGE: Give up a vice (smoking, weed, chocolate)

I try not to eat crap, but still I fail. It's better to give up one at a time. Like quitting chocolate this week and weed the next. Not all together.

Challenge 5: Make something from the above. Advanced: Get a cook book and try to cook at least 3-4 times a week over the next 9 weeks.

I don't know about cooking. It isn't high tech ****, but it's still a femine thing. I'll give it a shot.

@gav ... I would suggest using the creatine in your breakfast or in with meal of the day. That way it absorves much better. And also creatine gives you more ATP to burn during your workouts, so I suggest using it before it.

>>should i increase this to 7times a week?

it all depends on the dose. A teenspoon a day is fine.

Your off on the sushi bub. On yours the sushi will be way to sweet. Mixing won't work to well either.

try this.

Cook short grain rice(Japanese/sushi rice/ect,) like you said.

Put 4 tbsp rice wine vinager
2 tbsp sugar
1/2 tbsp salt
in a small bowl.

Heat and stir until all the sugar and salt has disolved. this will create a strong odor.

Put the rice in a shallow pan(wood preferably). Now pour the ricewine mix over the rice while stirring(wood spoon preferably). This is the tricky part. You need to cool the rice while stirring it. using a fan or blowdryer(set on cool). You should do this approx 3-5 min. Until the rice is cool and sticky.

this should create a less strong taste of the rice. So you can appreciate the fish more

IMPORTANT PART. while your making the roll you should have a small bowl of 1/2 rice vinager 1/2 water. and keep your fingers wet with this. It will keep the rice from sticking to your fingers.

Fill the nori with 1/3 rice then the filling.

Make an inside out roll by filling 2/3 of the nori with rice. Flipping it on seran wrap and putting the filing on and rolling. then cut off the excess nori.

to cut. cut in half then line up the pieces and sut into thirds.
To put some flavor in your cut. try cutting at angles.

experimentation will help a lot.

Get a bamboo rolling mat to help with your rolls.

Just a few tips to get you started.

The best way to cook is to try.

For example. an awsome steak marinade is

some wasabi and dijon mustard. (there are also some seasonings. But those are the main ingrediants)

Or how bout a

Fried honey, bannaa, and penut butter sandwich.

Most people who do goumet **** can't cook. Thats the problem with there gormet things... they can't fry a grilled cheese sandwich so they try to fry salmon???? com'on

If you want some good recipies I think there's a mag...

Food and Wine sumthing?

Got tons of great easy recipies

Barbucuing.... Ribs.... Boil the ribs before cooking. This will make them tender and easy to pull off the bone

If any of you have cooking questions ask me... I can give you answers to any qestion... How do you make the deviled eggs holes centered...

Leave the egg crate on it's side overnight. This will cause the yolks to center.... put some food coloring in the water so you can tell the boiled eggs from the unboiled ones.Nyeways.... Just some pointers.

Cool workout...

I on the other hand don't want to get REALLY big...I just want to cut..

My workout goes something like this....

Dumbell curls - 5 sets of 15 reps (10lbs)

Crunches 5 sets of 15 (Only rising 3 inches off ground)

Pushups 3 sets of 30 reps

Left and right jabs 20 jabs each w/ 5lbs dumbells

Left and right hooks (same weight and reps)

Left and right upper cuts (same weight and reps)

Shadowbox for around 10-15 mins.

I also run a mile every tuesday.

I do these excersies on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Of course since I run a mile on tuesday..(Im in a policing thing for teens and we have workouts on tuesdays) I always cut my monday workout a lil short by about 5 reps.

As far as eating goes...? Whatever I feel like at the time.

Thanks for helping out everyone- I was really stuggling this week!

Personally, I don't think body weight exercises are anywhere near as effective as free weights. Still, try both and see what you think- body weight exercises have the obvious advantage of being far far cheeper!

I also totally forgot to put in my little bit on your stomach! You need a range of exercises to get all your stomach muscles worked. I do crunches, hip raises, and supermen. For crunches you can up the difficulty by first doing them with your arms crossed over, then doing them stretched into the air, then with a weight held to your chest, then with a weight held in the air. Of course, totally pointless if you don't sort out your diet!

Stretches! How could I forget, especially when starting each 8 week cycle.

Thanks to everyone who contributed on exercise and cooking, I was pretty stuck there. Can't really add anything!

I think, for this topic, all the information you will realisticly need can be found. Easily. It really is a matter of getting motivated and organised. Just wondering, before I let this week rest, would anyone find excel template workout tables/challenge tables/self-improvement boards useful?

If you just stick up your e-mail I'll post them to you.

Cheers again to everyone! This stuff is so important, but I can just straight up talk better about the stuff in later weeks. Hope there is a lot of you guys working through the challenges by now!

“The 22 Psychological Triggers That Make Women Chase You… Starting Tonight”

Forget the cash, the cars, and the chiseled jawlines. Female desire operates on a completely different frequency. Primal. Subconscious. Triggers that bypass her logic and hit her on a gut level. Most guys are totally blind to them.

I know because I was one of them. The overthinking. The paralysis. The silent drive home kicking yourself for freezing up. Watching average guys walk away with the girl while you stood there stuck in your own head.

Then I decoded the psychology behind what actually makes women tick. 22 hard rules.  Subtle behavioral shifts that rewired my entire reality. The anxiety evaporated. Women started leaning in. Investing. Chasing.

Nice idea Cloud. This week will be really easy for me since I already lift 4x per week and know how to cook. Only hard part will be changing my diet, and we all know how much of a b!tch that can be! Anyways, here's my 2 cents.

1. Whenever you can, get someone to spot you. This allows you to train beyond failure (you do all the reps you can yourself, then do two assisted ones). However, on the assisted reps, make sure they don't give you too much help. The weight should be just barely moving upwards.

2. Creatine: I've found that I do make small gains in mass and strength when on creatine, however, it gives me cramps while running. Since track is over now, that's not an issue, and I take it. Creatine is one of the cheapest and safest supplements, as long as you drink the requisite amount of water. A big tub of 200 servings will run you about $28 at GNC, about 14 cents per serving. (I don't know what that would be in pounds for you silly Englishmen).
