Should I get filling for my Cavity?

Hi Everyone

I know this is no way related to dj'ing, but I figure "Anything Else" would be a good place to try to find this information. Today I went to the dentist to get x-rayed and cleaning, they told me I have two small cavities and I should get them filled soon. My mom is hellbent on not getting them filled because she belives that they are worthless and that the dentist does it for the money.

Is my mom right? or should I try to fill the cavitiy? I'm worried about long term effects, and for me personally i'd rather get it filled.

So basically i'm looking for some insights on wether or not to just get it done and not listen to my mom, or if she's actually correct that the dentist do it to make more money.

don't get it filled, and the cavity gets bigger.

it gets bigger again.

and bigger again.

next thing you know you're root is infected (the nerve connecting your tooth to your gum) and needs to be removed. this means one of 2 things.

1) tooth removed root dies, u move one with one less tooth.

2) the dentist drills a bigger whole in your tooth and over 2-4 operations he removes the root, cures the infection and fills gum/empty tooth with rubber. there is no gurantee that won't become infected later, but in most cases you'll be fine. then you need a cap over the giant whole (cavity + drilling) into your tooth.


my story. I had a filling, it came out one day.

"mum i lost a filling when i was eating"
"you'll be fine quest."
"ok mum"

2-3 years later i went to the dentist to get my wisdom teeth out. he put a filling in where that one came out years before.

one day i had this incredible pain in my tooth..

i brushed my tooth and it seemed to go away.
(it was actually the cold water making it go away)

the infection was creating gas, which was causing pain. the cold water would cool the gas and ease the pain. i couldn't fight the pain, rushed to the dentist, had to wait. then see option 2. above.

Quest: Does your post mean that I should get it filled? From the sounds of it, its like either decision I pick, It would lead to what you went through.

In the end, i'll probably get it filled, even if I have to use my money. I'd rather know that I could have prevented something, then did nothing at all.

You don't need teeth. Just look at Shane McGowan, he gets tons of chicks.
 

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

The last time I went to the dentist I was so young I can't even remember! (maybe 15 years ago)

I have been to the doctor only once in 10 years. I don't trust doctors and I don't trust medicine. I am one of the healthiest people you will ever meet. Maybe because I don't go to the doctor and don't use medicine?

Ya know, some dentists are money grubbing morons who prescribe useless interventions constantly.

However, I'd air on the side of caution. If he is telling the truth, which he probably is, that cavity will continue to get bigger and more infected as time goes on. Then you will feel true pain.

This is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard.

There is a reason the avg lifespan has increase dramatically over the past decades...and it ain't because of organic foods and purified water.

Not going to a dentist is just dumb, even if u brush your teeth very well, there is always a chance of gettin a cavity, and the dentist is the only way to address that problem unless u want to lose a tooth.

Lastly, while it is true that a lot of society over medicates for every small problem, it is also true that not going to doctors at all is just as foolish. Its flawed logic to criticize one extreme (seeing doctors for every little problem) and then advocate another extreme (never go to the doctor).

Don't trust medicine huh?? So when your in a car accident and break your arm, just gunna go home and put a band aid on it? When it gets infected..just toss on some neosporin huh? When it turns gangrene??

The average lifespan has increased dramatically over the past century primarily because of public sanitation policy.

That being said, not using medical services when you are too sick to take care of yourself is truly a foolhardy move.

You're dumb. You aren't healthy because you don't see the doctor or take medicine, you're healthy just because you're lucky, and frankly, most people that have good sanitation and hygiene are generally healthy. It's not because you don't see the doctor, dumbsh*t.

Right.... just like the woman who finds a lump in her breast but doesn't go to the doctor anyways. Of course she thinks she's healthy until 5 years later she finally gets it checked and its cancer. They gave her 6 weeks to live. (If you didn't pick up on it...true story)

I mean seriously why would a doctor know anything they've hardly got an education and whatnot.
