Sexual Selection, for those that are not familiar with it, is a theory that was proposed by Charles Darwin to explain certain traits, such as the tail of the peacock, that have no apparent survival value. The theory suggests that this type of characterisitic is a result of female preference. The female of the species selects its mates based on its preference for certain attributes.
There is no conclusive explanantion of why this apparently irrational preference starts (N.B. They're female
). Whatever the reason, once the process has started, the selection process reinforces both the attribute and the preference. The female will select the male that has the strongest display of the attractive attribute because this increases the chances that these attributes will be reproduced in male children. The females who have the highest chance of seeing their genes passed are those that pursue and produce males with these attributes. This progression continues until any disadvantages of the trait become a handicap for survival. The result is that while a peacock may have gaudy plumage, the peahen has an even stronger taste for it.

The Rockstar has obvious massive preselection; the Superjock has obvious physical survival traits; and the Jerk's attributes are also immediately obvious (whether or not the woman admits to herself the guy is jerk, her entourage can see it right away). They are all peacocks with gaudy plumage and for the peahens, attraction is not a choice.
Exageration of attraction attributes can also be seen in the Seduction Community. David DeAngelo describes ****y as "a man who is just a little more confident than he should be". Mystery, a 6 foot 5 inch skinny dude, is famous for his "peacocking" with a tall hat and has worn platform shoes - both accesories that exagerate his height. Shock and Awe takes the direct approach to its extreme. This is sexual selection.
The amplification of attractive characteristics is why trying to hide that you are a DJ will ruin any chance you have of real success.
