For those of you who don't know, Leone was the man who made those western films your fathers raved about so long ago. He was the quinnessential director who created arguarbly the best western triliogy of all time, the man with no name trilogy (Fistful of dollars, For a Few Dollars more, The Good The Bad and the Ugly) of which each are masterpieces.

If you haven't seen these movies you are doing yourself a grave injustice. Eastwood is the ultimate manipulator in these films and plays his enviroment to a key. This is the mentality of the seasoned DJ. Know your enviroment from start to finish and adapt to the situation as necessary to acheive your ultimate goal. Do well and pick up these movies and learn to love them.

Great movies. Check out "Jujimbo" and "Sanjuro" (sp?), too. The concepts for those westerns came from these samurai flicks
I love how smart some of you are! Leone borrowed from the "wandering samurai" motif for his westerns! Still the westerns are a modernised cultural version of the everlasting sagas. He got lucky with eastwood being so good at filling the rolls of the hero. Still I'm glad to see that people on this board are sound with research and thinking beyond with what's posted here! kudos!

And this is my moment as a superhero...who's average himself and knows it.

Humility and and understanding in it is what makes you a smart individual. Being culturaly aware of good things in a small way makes you smart. You love a theme of humanity that gives you better human understanding then a lot of "well developed" people around you.

Don't sell yourself short. Expand on what you do understand.

You boys are talking my kinda talk!

If you want to learn and understand superior filmmaking check out all of Akira Kurosawa's work. My favorites of his being Yohimbo, He who stepped on the tigers tail, Rashoman, The Hidden Fortress, Kagemusha, Ran and Seven Samurai.

His films have influenced every great Director from Howard Hawks to George Lucas (The Hidden Fortress is what he based Star Wars on) to Quentin Tarantino.

Sergio Leone used much of Kurosawa's wandering samurai motif in his spaghetti westerns.

Yeah, Kurosawa had some great films. So glad there was a Kurosawa film festival here a few years ago ...

Sergio Leone was a master of atmosphere.

No. There was some talk about plagiarising Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven though.

Quite the opposite, I read that when John Sturges came out with the magnifcent seven, great movie by the way, and it being a remake of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, when Kurosawa saw it,He liked it so much,he gave Sturges a special sword of honour, yet a few years later, when Leone came out with A Fistful Of Dollars, and it being a western remake of Kurosawa's Yojimbo,Kurosawa tried to sue him. And Once Upon In The West is great as well!!! I know all about Leone!!! I have some great websites not just about him,but spaghetti westerns in general!!! Leone is one of my favorite directors, alonf with John Ford,Staley Kubrick,Martin Scorsese,Sam Peckinpah,Tim Burton, John Carpenter,Steven Speilberg and Howard Hawks.

Get your facts straight jack. When The Magnificent Seven came out the studio was hit with a suit about the plagiarist nature of it's story. Though it never went to court there was still legal talk in the mix.

I never said Kurosawa wasn't a fan of it. As a matter of fact, he was extremely generous with all of his films.

And how the fvck can anyone who loves film leave out possibly the best Director of all time in Billy Wilder? That you added Peckinpah is redeemable.

I never read about him suing over magnifient seven,I read he tried to sue over A Fistul Of Dollars. John Ford is the greatest director of all time. He has influenced everyone, and his influence is still being felt today. Second to that would be Kubrick. No one will be able to do what he did.

Kurosawa did not file suit. The distribution studio overseeing his work did but it fizzled out. Regarding John Ford and Kubrick being the greatest Directors is a complete joke. I am a working filmmaker so I speak with authority about this subject and I know what my opinion carries. They're notable at best.

Kubrick went completely insane (worse than David Lynch) towards the end of his career. His best film was his first, The Killing. John Ford has some memorable spots but not one of my instructors in film school ever mentioned him in any regard.

Nonetheless, If you really are a student of the art then do yourself a favor and watch everything from Billy Wilder, Quentin Tarantino and Hitchcock to see true vision and cohesiveness between word, actor then watch your reaction from those on screen.

If you currently have too many women chasing you, calling you, harassing you, knocking on your door at 2 o'clock in the morning... then I have the simple solution for you.

Just read my free ebook 22 Rules for Massive Success With Women and do the opposite of what I recommend.

This will quickly drive all women away from you.

And you will be able to relax and to live your life in peace and quiet.

I've seen alot of work from Wilder,Tarantino, and Hitchcock, yes they are all memorable, they have all made great work. I am a fan of all of them. Kubrick's best is 2001. I mean,Kubrick was a genius, people are still trying to figure him out, people are still debating, while he just did. I am not a working filmmaker, but hope to be. I am just a fan,so I could really care less about what some film school teacher says. Ford and Kubrick's work are some of the most powerful stuff out there.

Clint Eastwood's portrayal is one of a killer being acceptingly lovable - it is a political message - for those who understand the reality of things!!!!

Ehhh we're talking another generation here buddy! Don't get me wrong Unforgiven is a GOOD movie but no where near as good as the old lone gun man/wandering samurai films of days past. It was made in the 90's, and the filming for those themes was long gone. The "Western Myth" was much bigger then any one movie or even how actual historical accounts of how events during those periods occured...It's the stuff of legand exactly.

That makes one of us. Let me tell you something I learned a long time ago:

"Those who can, do. Those who can't, fantasize."

Until you've been behind a camera delegating responsibilites to crew, handling cast issues and keeping the continuity of a set together, you can keep "hoping" to have a valid opinion. These "Teachers" have all been in the spot I am, TRUE FVCKING FILMMAKERS, so keep you flubbery to a minimum.

Ford and Kubrick's work are some of the most powerful stuff out there.
True, but it's nothing future filmmakers wil turn to in the future for inspiration.
