So I go up, exchange a few friendly pleasantries, order my tea like every other time, and sit down to pore over my Eddie Bunker biography. The barista that was up there yesterday is the best looking one this place has...great body, face (easily a 9, pushing a 10 in a lot of aspects).

Since I had some time to sit and read (and I was in a position where I could use my peripherals) I decided to watch the other male customers' interactions with her out of the corner of my eye. It was astounding. This one guy talked to her about absolutely nothing for five minutes (I'm assuming he was a regular) and another guy attempted in vain to get her phone number by using the whole "I lost my number" bit.

What really amazed me was her composure during all of this, though. She stayed friendly during all of this and even looked interested in what the other guy was ranting about. I guess when you get hit on that much it just comes naturally.

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

I think she friendly to everyone. I know a couple of really pretty girls that are like that here in Roma.

She's a barrista. She wants to earn money, not lose her job by being unfriendly to customers.

Most Starbucks baristas I encounter are very personable and friendly -- I'd never mistake it for interest, though.

FWIW -- in the current economy, a Starbucks job ain't all that bad, considering everyone walking through the door gets benefits.

Tell her a little about yourself, but not too much. Maintain some mystery. Give her something to think about and wonder about when she's at home.
