The best thing to do would be to go to a sports store with people that actually know something about running shoes and try out the different shoes. I know if you buy a pair of Brooks and you don't like the way they feel after a week or so, you can return them.
I like Sauconys, but I don't need as much cushion as some. I agree with jookins though, running barefoot is awesome, but it only works if you're on grass or some other soft surface, roads and sidewalks aren't very forgiving on your feet.
If you're serious about running, 4-5 miles 4 times a week, you'll want something with more cushion than the frees.
