yay or nay?

I run as well but I was thinking that subsitituting one or 2 days of running per week with rowing might be a good idea to save my shins some pain.

Thoughts?

For stamina, yes. For bulking up no. Good warm up though.

I'm not looking at bulking. I'm looking at toning up and increasing upper body strength whilst mainting a slim-medium frame. I also need to learn to run faster. However, running every day is playing havoc with my shins.

Still a good idea?

If you want to build a strong upper body frame then do weights. The rowing machine will just make you develop wiry stamina muscles if you focus on it. Doing weights will give you upper body strength and make you slim and toned. And if you want to run faster, don't forget to do weights with your leg muscles.

Run faster can mean many things. Do you mean sprinting quickly (being able to accelerate quickly to top speed and hold it for as long as possible)? Or do you mean being able to run as fast as you can for 20-30 minutes? Your training will differ depending on what you want to do.
 

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

Look at sprinters and look at long distance runners. Running is not enough, its HOW you run.

If you do high intensity, short periods of rowing you can get a very large upper body. The key is intensity. Low intensity and long periods will lead to a wiry frame.

BTW, we're talking about the ergometer righ, not the weighed row machine??

Yeah, rowing is awesome. I'd alternate days. Amazing cardio capabilities. Anyone who doubts this, get on one and go 500 m as fast as possible and see how exhausted you are after 2 minutes of work. I row at least once a week.

I was thinking this.

Monday- am: Rowing pm: An hour at the gym

Tuesday-am: Running pm: Sit-up and pull-up challenge

Wednesday-am: Maybe a 20 minute run and my push up thing pm:An hour at the gym

Thursday-Sit-up and pull-up challenge. No cardio.

Friday- am:Rowing pm: The push up thing

Saturday- am: Running pm:Sit-up and pull-up challenge

Sunday-am: Running pm: The push-up thing

All the gym time is dependant on my shifts at work. Mondays and Wednesdays are likely to happen; Saturdays, not so much.

Does that little schedule look half decent? I'm trying to avoid weights as I'm trying to get fitter for my navy selection and excess muscle will hinder my pre-joining fitness tests.

Also, how does this look?

It looks like a rowing machine. They're all the same. Do some research into the brand to make sure you're not buying a flimsy piece of junk. Never heard of V-Fit in my life.

What is your goal with this rowing. Substitute for running, i get it. But for what. Warm up, endurance, speed & strength?

Fair one :)

Cardiovascular endurance. THat's it. I can run fast enough but my CVE is piss-poor over longer distances.

Yes rowing is great for this. Should help with overall endurance as long as you continue running.

Endurance is more than just the cardiovascular system as you've probably noticed. Got to train that slow twitch muscle in your legs to do endurance too.
