Roommates

I'm moving off to college in a matter of weeks and still don't have a place to live. The dorms were all filled up. A former FB of mine asked me to move in with her but has to check with her other roommate whose dad owns the place. She's been saying she'll find out for weeks and still hasn't. So I'm looking elsewhere. I've found other options.

Anyways thats the background info. But The reason for posting this is to ask for any adivce on qualities to look for in a roommate. Positive or negative roommate stories, experiences, etc.

heres my 2 cents.

first of all as stated above , dont live with couples.
When looking for a roomate or room , always ask the basic questions :
do you work or study?
are you gonna be home alot?
do you smoke , drink alot ?
Are you gonna share teh food ?
the electrisity bill the water , gas etc etc etc.
do you have people over alot ?
etc etc etc.
Always go around the place to look how it is.
Dont sign a lease on the first day. dont sign at all if possible.( dont want to be stuck in a place with a roomate that you cant work with)
other then that its basic stuff , hows the chemistry between you two etc etc. how they act the first two days after youve moved in.

heres my story , just moved to Australia from Norway.
First i spent about 1 week trying to find a place , and since there are so many new people looking for a place to live there were always too many looking at the good places . So alwasy call and book a time to go check out the place as early as you can dont wait to the last few days.
So after a couple of places wich looked good , but i didnt get , i moved into this one place with 2 girls , they were sisters , seemed pretty nice and decent. So i move in after one day , and the whole **** came loose , they didnt even greet me when i moved in , they stood there and were making and eating dinner and didnt even offer to give me some. after they had eaten they left a huuuge ass mess in the kitchen , stuff all over the floors. they just went upstairs to their rooms to chat online . there were 2 bathrooms in the house , and i go into the downstairs bathroom ,to find the toilet is yeah it looked like some one blew a ****bomb in there and left. So i thought hey maby its just the first day , and try to find out more stuff about them talk to them the next morning , they said two words and went back into their rooms , i then asked if they wanted to get somethign from the grocery store as i was being polite and friendly they gave me a list and i went to buy it ,had to walk like 30 mins (they said it was 5 mins away) came back they were sitting on the sofa ,while i was carrying like 4 bags of groceries not even coming to help put stuff away , yeah , that evening i just said hey look i dont think this is gonna work out so im leaving. and did so , booked myself into a hostel.

so that night i set up a few new places to look at. And eventually i found this place close to the Uni and the guy seems cool enough ,i got the masterbedroom with my own bathroom. and 30 dollers cheaper a month only problem was the place wasent furnished , but today he gave me a lift to a place to buy a bed and stuff and even afterwards drove me back to the uni. he seems liek a nice guy so im really happy about it. and he said i dont have to sign a lease or anything if i dont want to , wich is good cuz then i can freely move out if things dont work out.

so my advice is ; dont pick the first place you see or say yes to you , always look at the place first , ask people common questions , and if possible , try to room with a guy cuz female roomates are CRAZY!!!

Thanks for the advice. Funny you steer me clear of women. I've been looking at options that have two female roommates. I'd probably end up having more fun and get along better with males. My Dad and I are actually discussing being partners and buying a place. It would be a good investment.

Yes living with women can be messed up, I use to live with two strippers (Before you get excited) they were the filthiest girls I've ever met... They always had guys coming and going in the middle of the night. The bathroom and toilet were a brothel, they also had cats.... which use to piss and **** all over my bed while I was sleeping in it. I got even with that ****en cat, but that's another story. Also they were stingy and were always short of cash... hmmmm I wonder where their money was going ....... I hid anything of value in my bedroom, under mattresses and stuff because I trusted them about as far as I could throw them. The lesson here is figure as much out about the people your going to live with before you move in. Don't chose a bad place for the sake of saving a few bucks..

That is a great idea. One of friends did that actually. Just buy a cheap rundown house near campus. Fix it up and then you live there yourself while also renting out the empty rooms to other students. When you graduate, sell it. Ka-ching

That was my plan. Surprisingly my mom likes the idea. My dad on the other hand doesn't want to make that investment right now. He'd rather buy some land in another location and pay my rent. Which wow he will pay my rent for me thats great, But I'd like some responsibility and pay my own rent.
Which just eats me up I can't justify paying rent for 4 years for myself (not to mention 4 years worth of rent to be paid for my sister once she gets there)

So for now I guess I'm stuck trying to find a place to throw money at aka rent for a high price. Maybe once I turn 19 and can legally sign a contract I can look into purchasing a Trailer and/or some land of my own.

mpimpin, have you ever lived with a female by yourself before? It's not terrible if they can cook or they like going out but you won't get in the washroom. My problem was she could cook but wasn't that great at it. There were times when I had ketchup soup instead.

no I haven't. I'm just leaving home and flying out of the nest. The original girl i was going to move in with is one of my closest friends and occasional FB. She loves to cook for me It was looking perfect, but her parents had issues with a male living with her.

Never Ever!!! Share Food!!!!! Especially If Your Roommates Are Fat And Eat Alot. Its Not Fair That Whenever You Bring Home Bags Full Of Groceries And You Only Got To Eat 1 Chicken Wing And The Next Day Its All Gone By Your Fat Roommate!!! What Have You Got Left To Eat???

Well I just got back and I am extremely impressed. I'm more then willing to actually pay rent. The place and neighborhood is wonderful! The guys are great. The dad that owns the place is cool. Extremely reasonable price. It's kinda strict. Not supposed to smoke or have alcohol on the premises. I thought about it though and realized that that might be a good thing. I can go other places to party. Why would I wanna risk a party at my place aka piss in my own pool.
